The Efficient Solution Label is granted to solutions that meet high standards of both sustainability and profitability. The labelling process involves a strict assessment by independent experts. The organization behind the label – the Solar Impulse Foundation - is building a portfolio of 1,000 labelled solutions that will be promoted to governments and businesses worldwide with the aim of accelerating the transition to a carbon-free and sustainable economy.
The Solar Impulse Foundation is chaired by Bertrand Piccard, one of the pilots of Solar Impulse, the first aircraft to fly around the world powered only by solar energy. Building on the success of that flight, the Foundation aims to identify clean, efficient and profitable solutions that will address environmental challenges while enabling economic growth.
Huge potential for energy saving with IE5 SynRM motors
The vast number of motors operating around the world means there is huge potential for efficient motors to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. In fact, industrial motors alone use one-third of all the electricity produced globally.
The highest motor efficiency class presently available is IE5. Installing an IE5 SynRM motor to replace an IE3 motor can provide a big reduction in CO2 emissions. The reduction can be as high as 22,000 kilograms of CO2 per year for an application rated at 315 kilowatts. This is equivalent to taking nine petrol-fueled cars off the roads.
Other benefits of IE5 SynRM motors include lower operating temperatures than induction motors. This boosts the lifetime of the bearings and windings, resulting in better overall reliability. SynRM motors also help to improve the working environment as their noise levels are lower.
SynRM technology is based on an advanced rotor design with variable speed drive (VSD) control. It offers the performance advantages of permanent magnet motors with the simplicity of an induction motor platform. The motors do not use magnets or rare earth materials, which makes for easy servicing and an environmentally-friendly design.
ABB IE5 SynRM motors provide accurate torque and speed control as well as high efficiency across the entire speed range, even at partial loads. They are already used in a wide range of industrial applications, including fans, pumps, compressors, extruders, mixers, winches and conveyors. They are available in the power range 5.5 – 315 kilowatts.
“IE5 SynRM motors make it easy for industrial plants to cut their energy consumption,” says Tero Helpiö, Global Product Manager, IEC LV motors, ABB Motion. “The Efficient Solution Label will further boost the visibility of this groundbreaking technology. Backed by the Solar Impulse Foundation, the label confirms that IE5 SynRM motors are the first choice for motor users looking to reduce their energy usage and CO2 emissions.”
