ABB and ChargeLab have partnered to offer integrated electric vehicle charging hardware and software. ChargeLab’s OCPP network platform will run on top of ABB’s Terra DC chargers and the brand-new Terra AC wallbox to enable smarter EV charging for a wide range of use cases.
The demand for networked EV charging solutions has grown exponentially in the past year as buildings and fleets are realizing the potential of connected EV infrastructure. The IEA predicts at least 140 million new public and private EV chargers will be installed globally by 2030.1
ABB and ChargeLab already offer networked chargers to multi-family buildings, workplaces, public commercial parking, and fleets of all sizes.
Known for the most advanced EV charging solutions available, ABB’s portfolio and services span the entire kW chain from compact, high-quality AC wallboxes to reliable DC fast charging stations, Terra 54 (Fast Chargers) and Heavy Vehicle Chargers. ABB and ChargeLab will supply the full range of solutions giving building managers and installers all the tools they need to deploy smart EV infrastructure.
ChargeLab’s cloud-based software connects EV chargers using Ethernet, WiFi, or cellular data. Once connected, site hosts can monitor their chargers 24/7, receive automated reports, and set detailed billing or energy management profiles. ChargeLab also provides end-user interfaces that make it easy for any EV driver to find, pay for, and use charging stations. ChargeLab’s software can be customized specifically for public, private, and fleet use cases.
This new partnership will see ABB pre-load ChargeLab’s platform on its EV chargers, and give ChargeLab the resources to build custom software solutions tailored for ABB chargers. The companies aim to make deploying, monitoring, and monetizing EV chargers easier than ever before.
“This partnership will enable a deeper integration to create better experiences for EV charger installers, site hosts, and end users,” said Stephen Koskoletos, Head of EV Charging Infrastructure Canada at ABB.
ABB and ChargeLab both remain firmly committed to the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) and interoperability. This means ABB chargers will continue to be the best choice for any OCPP network operator, and ChargeLab’s software will remain compatible with a range of hardware.
“The ecosystem of open EV charging has exploded in the past few years, giving businesses and governments more choice than ever before,” said Zachary Lefevre, CEO of ChargeLab. “But challenges remain due to loose integrations between hardware and software. ABB and ChargeLab are building a seamless user experience that will bring the EV charging industry to the next level.”
ChargeLab’s software is available on ABB DC chargers today. The ABB Terra AC wallbox will begin deliveries in Q1 2021.
