Turkey-based TANAP Natural Gas Transmission Co.’s project was bestowed Project Management Institute (PMI)’s “Project of the Year” award in a virtual event held on October 20, 2020.
Every year, PMI – a world-leading association for professionals and organizations in project, program and portfolio management – selects the best project as part of its PMI® Professional Awards. The award recognizes project excellence, considering project size, complexity and budget as well as project management practices, organizational results and societal impact.
“This award is a testament to the exemplary efforts of all those involved in TANAP, including our employees, contractors and partners, who worked well together to achieve an on-time and on-budget project completion while maintaining the highest standards in quality, health and safety, and environmental requirements. We appreciate each and every one of you for your contribution to our success,” said Omer Korkmaz, Projects and Modifications Director, TANAP.
Largest-ever fully integrated control and security system by ABB
As part of the landmark project, ABB installed a state-of-the-art SCADA, integrated security and telecommunications systems, a main pipeline control complex, containerized equipment rooms and a 4,000 km fiber optic cable for secure transmission of data, intrusion detection and subsea pipeline leak detection monitoring, all of which will ensure safe and reliable functioning of the pipeline throughout its lifetime.
“ABB’s world-class project execution skills, cutting-edge 800xA automation system and integration of leading third-party solutions were the key differentiators for TANAP. The project itself presented many unique challenges due to its length, difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions. The technical expertise and professionalism of our project team combined with the flexibility and intelligence of our systems facilitated the smooth completion of this large and complex project,” said Troy Stewart, Local Division Manager, ABB UK.
The fiber optic cable, spanning the length of the pipeline, carries vast amounts of data from the control and telecommunication systems. The extensive communications infrastructure forms the longest system of its kind in the world. ABB has also installed an integrated security system to monitor external and internal CCTV cameras and the perimeter intruder detection system of every site. With more than 1,300 cameras and 650 access control points, this is ABB’s largest integrated security system installed to date.
TANAP is the longest part of the $40 billion Southern Gas Corridor, which also comprises the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). Currently, TANAP is capable of transporting up to 16 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas annually, of which 10 bcm is meant for Europe and the rest for Turkey. It was inaugurated in November 2019 and is fully operational.
