The mill electrification project will be carried out in close cooperation with ABB Uruguay, which will be responsible for the project's onsite operations and will handle the installation and commissioning services on site together with ABB Process Industries Division, Finland. Hitachi ABB Power Grids delivers the project's power and distribution transformers in cooperation with ABB Process Industries Division leading the project.
ABB is already known in Uruguay for the supply and maintenance of many industrial electrical systems and equipment. Local support is important to customers, and ABB has a strong local organization in the country.
ABB's deliveries to the UPM plant that will be located near the city of Paso de los Toros in Uruguay will begin in April 2021, and the last equipment belonging to ABB's electricity distribution system will be delivered in October the same year.
“We are proud to be the chosen partner by UPM for the entire mill power distribution system. Cooperation with UPM is built on trust, and the project has progressed in an exemplary manner”, says Mikael Ingo, who heads the local Process Industries Division at ABB Process Automation.
The new UPM pulp mill is scheduled to start in the second half of 2022. Its production capacity will be 2.1 million tons of eucalyptus pulp per year, and with its state-of-the-art technology it will become one of the most competitive pulp mills in the world.
