ABB receives certification for smart substation control and protection SSC600

DNV GL has granted the IEC 61850 level A certificate to SSC600 – the device has successfully passed all validation and testing procedures

ABB’s centralized protection for distribution substations SSC600 device has been certified by DNV GL1, one of the world’s leading certification bodies, confirming that the device has a validated and approved server functionality as defined in the IEC 61850 standard. IEC 61850 is an international standard that includes communication protocols for intelligent electronic devices at electrical substations.

"Centralizing protection and control is the future for safe and smart power distribution” said Henry Niveri, Product Manager in ABB’s Distribution Solutions division. “Receiving this certificate is an important milestone. Applying the standard is key to being able to truly centralize all protection and control functionality and gain extensive interoperability.”

ABB AbilityTM smart substation control and protection for electrical systems SSC600, represents a new approach to protection and control in distribution networks – centralizing all protection and control functionality into one single device. This conveniently reduces network complexity and allows easy and cost-efficient process management.

As a part of the ABB Ability portfolio of connected solutions, SSC600 supports utilities and industries in optimizing asset management during the entire lifetime of the digital substation. Combining SSC600 with merging units creates a unique, IEC 61850-certified, centralized protection and control solution. ABB’s merging units have also been certified according to the same standard.

ABB’s SSC600 solution creates a future-proof basis for the protection and control of substations. With SSC600 upgrading the entire substation system has never been easier, as customers have only one device to modify. The modular software allows both customization and flexible modification and customers also have continuous access to new software developments, which makes evolving with the grid easy.

ABB launched SSC600 in early 2019 and is building on the platform, introducing new functionality and extending scope to enable increasingly safer, smarter and more flexible electrical networks. SSC600 is ready to change with the evolving grid and continuously deliver power reliably and efficiently.
