ABB drives take care of HVAC and water supply systems of Moscow Mercedes-Benz plant

The constructor of the plant, which was established two years ago in Esipovo Industrial cluster in the Moscow region, needed to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operation of the pumping and ventilation systems at the manufacturing facilities.

Almost 200 ACQ580 drives for the water pumps and ACH580 drives for HVAC systems were installed in the boiler rooms and production facilities of the plant. All the equipment was easy to fully integrate into the plant’s automation network via the Profibus DP interface.

ABB’s new drives were installed in cooperation with the Turkish company Esta Construction. Plant’s automation technicians were trained in how to operate the equipment and integrate it into the network. Mercedes-Benz was satisfied with the project, having the plant to be fully equipped and operational within 16 months and ready to start car manufacturing.

“We were pleased to cooperate with ABB experts on this project. The company's variable speed drives are easy to install, configure, and are convenient and easy to use,” says Ali Ozdemir, Head of electrical engineering at Esta Construction.

ABB’s ACQ580 drives control stable operation of pumping units and a continuous flow of water, while ensuring that energy is efficiently used. The drives’ condition monitoring system allows  easy process data collection online without the need for additional equipment. This monitoring service can significantly reduce maintenance costs.

ACH580 drives have complete HVAC functionality and user-friendly menu. The drives can support any type of AC motor, including high-performance permanent magnet motors and jet-rotor synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM).

The built-in override functionality ensures continuous operation of the drive in emergency situations, such as fire, controlling the smoke exhaust fan. The function assists a building smoke control system, ensure safety of personnel during evacuation in case of fire.

“Thanks to well-coordinated and efficient work between ABB and Esta Construction, we managed to offer energy efficient and digital solution corresponding to customer's needs, which has helped us to win the tender despite tough competition,” says Ruslan Khismatullin, Local ABB Motion Business Area Manager in Russia. “Products have to meet stringent requirements for this type of project, and I’m proud to say that ABB drives is a great solution for all the application challenges.”

For ABB, supply of equipment for the Mercedes-Benz plant is another successful project to equip automotive enterprises in Russia with innovative equipment. For example, ABB drives are already working at the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga, as well as at the Nokian Tires car tire manufacturing plant in Vsevolozhsk.
