ABB modernizes LV AC drives at Mondi SCP paper mill to ensure operational efficiency

ABB has modernized existing drive units from ACS600 to ACS880 at Mondi operation in Slovakia. The drive retrofit ensures lifetime support and reliability of the drives, improving the uptime and availability of Mondi SCP paper machine PM17.

Mondi SCP is part of Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, employing around 26,000 people across more than 30 countries with a focus on being sustainable by design. Mondi SCP is the largest wood processor and the largest producer of pulp and paper in Slovakia.

Mondi SCP installed ABB’s ACS880 retrofit solution on their paper machine PM17, as its existing ACS600 drive units were coming to the end of their lifecycle.

ABB helped the customer in selecting the best timing and scale for modernization actions, based on the lifecycle phase of the existing drives. Mondi discussed the best hardware solutions and controls system updates with ABB experts as well the time schedule for installation.

A team consisting of five ABB engineers with expertise in drive retrofits completed the installation and commissioning in a week’s time.

Retrofit: A fast way to modernize installed drives

Retrofits update the lifecycle of existing drives, bringing them into the active phase of the lifecycle. It allows the customer to replace only essential components of their drives. The existing infrastructure, cabinets and cabling, electrical machinery and automation system do not need to be replaced. This means, that the modernization can be undertaken with a minimum interruption to normal operations.

Retrofits don’t require major changes to the current infrastructure, as existing cabinet structures can be used. This minimizes the total investment required for a modernization project. Old generation multi-drives such as Sami Star, ACV700 and ACS600 can easily be modernized to the newest ACS880 technology.

Why ACS880?

The ACS880 drives are easily adaptable to suit the customer’s needs and integrate into various industry solutions. They are compatible with virtually all types of processes, automation systems, user groups and business requirements. ACS880 retrofits are customized to meet the precise needs of industries such as oil and gas, mining, metals, chemicals, cement, power plants, material handling, pulp and paper, sawmills, marine, water and wastewater, food and beverage and automotive. Yet, despite the drives’ wide-ranging capabilities, they are remarkably easy to use and integrate.

ACS880 technology enables digital connectivity and provides access to ABB’s digital services, such as ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring for drives. With this service, collecting and obtaining information from drives, and then analyzing it using digital algorithms, gives you valuable insight into your industrial equipment. This can raise your operating efficiency to higher levels than ever before.
