On World Earth Day, ABB officially launched its Compact Charger in China that integrates fast chargers and a compact secondary substation (CSS). This solution innovatively combines ABB’s leading electrical distribution and charging technologies, and reduces 80% of land construction and on-site commissioning through its prefabricated cables and other accessories, which will allow customers to build charging stations quickly and support China in creating sustainable transport solutions for the future.
According to James Zhao, lead business manager of ABB Electrification in China, ABB is committed to advancing the energy transition through innovation and building a green and smart transport value chain for a more sustainable future. From renewable energy generation and grid connection to smart distribution, and from smart manufacturing to charging facilities, ABB’s end-to-end solutions can bridge users, partners, products and applications, and meet their requirements with multi-dimensional and custom service, thus shifting China’s transport to electrification.
The transport industry is the world's second largest source of carbon emissions, and it is imperative to develop low-carbon transport solutions, especially shifting to electric. China’s carbon-neutral goal unlocks a huge growth potential for EV related industries. To achieve carbon neutrality, China has developed a series of development plans for green transport: the share of new energy vehicles (NEVs) will reach 20% by 2025; the electrification rate of transport will rise to 35% by 2050; and China’s carbon-neutrality will be realized by 2060. In this ecosystem, ABB solutions, as necessary supporting infrastructure for the development of EVs, play a highly critical role, building a bridge between power grid, renewable energy, and mobile energy terminals.
ABB’s Compact Charger that integrates the ABB Terra series DC fast chargers with a compact secondary substation is suitable for public parking lots, residential buildings, hotels, commercial buildings and other places. It also can be connected to the medium-voltage distribution network, and the standard product delivery feature allows it to be installed in regular parking areas and to occupy only one parking spot, significantly cutting down construction costs and project cycle. The plug-and-play and pre-tested compacted charger solution can be installed in a single day. Owners can immediately invest in 1 or 2 chargers and scale up as more consumers adopt EVs in the future. The solution supports cloud-based ABB online monitoring and remote maintenance, helping reduce operational costs by up to 55%.
“As increasingly more high power EV chargers are introduced in the market, building a new charging station may require the existing utility infrastructure to be changed. ABB’s Compact Charger can be connected to renewable energy and energy storage systems, and integrates high power DC chargers, supporting customers to construct charging stations safely and efficiently while reducing or eliminating impacts on the existing utility distribution. Today is World Earth Day, and we are delighted to launch this product in China. It provides a one-stop solution for writing a safe, smart and sustainable future.” Said Allen He, local division manager of Distribution Solutions, ABB China.
At the launch event, ABB and Jiangsu Media & Culture Zhu Fang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., signed the first China order for the compact charger.
Feng Jiang, general manager of Jiangsu Media & Culture Zhu Fang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. said: “Thanks to the ‘new infrastructure’ and ‘carbon-neutral’ objectives in China, the charging market is booming in recent months. We are glad to cooperate with ABB to build charging stations in an innovative and efficient way, by optimizing the layout of charging facilities and improving the charging convenience for drivers, thus paving the way for green mobility and China’s carbon neutrality. Customers are very happy about the 120kw chargers in bus stations, public charging stations which brings fast and safe charging experience. Also with ABB operating platform, most of the onsite service cost can be saved.”
The Compact Secondary Substation (CSS), part of the ABB’s Compact Charger, is a type tested and arc tested assembly comprising an enclosure containing medium-voltage (MV) switchgear, distribution transformers, low-voltage (LV) switchboards, connections and auxiliary equipment to supply LV energy from MV systems. Addressing China’s new infrastructure and carbon-neutral pledge, ABB has comprehensively upgraded its prefabricated substation family that covers digital substation, compact secondary substation, container substation, glass fiber reinforced polyester (GRP) enclosure substation, modular energy storage system and other solutions. With a more compact structure and more flexible solutions, the product family accommodates local standards.
ABB is a global leader in e-mobility, providing a full range of charging and electrification solutions for EVs, ships and railways. ABB entered the e-mobility market back in 2010, and today has sold more than 400,000 electric vehicle chargers across more than 85 markets; more than 20,000 DC fast chargers and 380,000 AC chargers, including those sold through Chargedot.
World Earth Day, celebrated on April 22 annually, was initiated by Gaylord Nelson and Denis Hayes in 1970. As a day specially established for protecting the global environment, it aims to enhance the public’s environmental awareness and engage the public in environmental protection activities, thus improving the environment of our planet by advocating green and low-carbon lifestyle.
