ABB supports drive modernization at the transmission plant of a global automotive supplier

ABB automation system PAISI2020 improves reliability and optimize productivity by upgrading the control technology

A leading global automotive parts manufacturer and supplier has selected ABB to ensure the successful completion of its modernization drive at one of its plant located at Neuenstein, Germany.

In March 2020, ABB bagged the contract to upgrade the existing transmission test bench with ABB automation system PAISI2020 that will optimize productivity.

“Our longstanding relationship  and previous instances of providing remote services by our test bench team to look after the installed base from our Mannheim office has been crucial in winning this contract,” Lukas Mix, Sales Specialist Process Industries at ABB Germany, noted.

Road to modernization

The modernization drive started after the spare parts procuring systems installed base became obsolete impacting the life cycle of the plant. In a bid to upgrade and optimize the testing process, ABB was awarded the contract to improve the reliability of the plant through PAISI2020 automation system that modernizes the plant’s control technology while reducing downtime and costs significantly. In addition, the PAISI2020 automation system also integrates the user interface and data recording and management in order to cover a holistic solution for test benches on one platform.

Moreover, ABB will implement its advanced software offerings and provide remote services to monitor the equipment reliability and availability while deploying troubleshooting tools and services as and when required. ABB Germany will conduct frequent test runs of the equipment and the systems that will act as a precursor to a seamless testing process.

“Based on our previous experiences of providing remote services to the customer's facility, this time we were able to build on the experience gained to replicate the performance of the test bench and improve it in individual aspects. The new system is flexible and user-friendly to design and operate, thereby making the changeover from the familiar system to the new one quicker with support from the commissioning and service staff,” Lukas Mix added.

In addition, the new PAISI2020 automation platform is intuitive and can be configured according to one’s ideas via drag-and-drop while enabling the display pages to be adapted and optimized easily, as shown in the example. This will save both time and costs for possible service calls by ABB.

Going forward

ABB’s state-of-the-art PAISI2020 automation system offers the possibility of integrating further customer-specific automation components as a part of its features that will lead to more automated test runs thereby improving its reliability and adaptability quotient. It adapts quickly to current requirements and is flexible to expand when needed.

“The joint exchange of experiences at the end of the project revealed the importance of considering all phases of the project from sales, engineering to commissioning on the plant. The minutes from the meetings with the customers will act as a blueprint for us to ensure further development of the automation solution which can be used for subsequent modernizations contacts,” Steffen Kopsch, Sales Specialist Process Industries Germany, remarked.
