Working with the community today, ABB Canada connects with the future

Through strong partnerships and empowering programs, ABB helps shape a brighter future.

As a leading global technology company, ABB is transforming society. This vision inspires us to stay connected locally through socially responsible and ethical practices. For over a century, we have been a proud partner and supporter of Canadian communities from coast to coast: ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our employees and the communities we live in, sharing knowledge, and supporting charitable organizations. Through our various initiatives, ABB is proudly enhancing the lives of Canadians in our workplaces, in our schools, and in our neighbourhoods.

Five areas of support

ABB Canada supports communities where our employees live and work by giving to organizations that work creatively to effect lasting changes in five defined focus areas:

Community support

Supporting where it matters most

For decades, ABB employees have come together each year for the Annual Giving Campaign, donating to those in need. With ABB’s dollar-for-dollar donation match policy, employees have been able to double the impact on their communities through our three key charity partners: United Way, HealthPartners and the Canadian Red Cross.

  • Every year, ABB Canada employees unite for the Annual Giving Campaign.
  • Employees are actively involved in the community by participating in various activities, including the Défi kayak Desgagnés.
  • Over the past five years, ABB Canada and its employees have donated over $4.2 million to support the communities in which they operate.

In 2020, we launched our “new way of giving” which marked the beginning of a new era of corporate philanthropy at ABB by making giving an everyday action. This new model leverages real-time reporting with a localized approach, so employees can support their local communities and charities when they want and in the way they want.

In the last five years alone, ABB Canada and its employees have donated well over $4.5 million to tackle some of Canada’s most widespread challenges, including social isolation, natural disasters and chronic illnesses.

Youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

Investing in future leaders

With continuous innovation in electrification, automation, motion and robotics, the demand for students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is greater than ever. At ABB, we recognize the need to support young people who are forging careers as the technology leaders of tomorrow.

  • ABB Canada fosters STEM education through various initiatives and partnerships.
  • ABB Canada invests in the development of future innovators.
  • Each year, ABB Canada welcome over 100 interns.

Through numerous educational initiatives and partnerships, we are championing the development of these future innovators. A perfect example of this is ABB’s role supporting Sheridan College’s students to develop, code and program the robot YuMi. Furthermore, the ABB School Program is brightening prospects for Canada’s two largest industries (construction and manufacturing) by supplying universities and trade schools, with the technology, installations and training they need to best equip their students.

With a commitment to grassroots initiatives, ABB managers often lead seminars, sit on expert panels and guide facility visits in the hope of inspiring the next generation. Our managers act as mentors to the 100+ interns we welcome each year.

But connecting young people with the future of our industry doesn’t stop there.

ABB Canada shares its knowledge with university students through an exciting range of courses and seminars. These help them bridge the gap between theory and practice, and gain insight into the fields of power electronics and automation. We also look for ways to help recent graduates apply their learning and gain experience, offering numerous entry-level opportunities within Canada. To nurture talent even further, a wide range of career opportunities are available through the ABB Global Trainee Program, and the ABB Discovery & early talent program.

Disaster relief in Canada

Standing strong together

In March 2020, when Canadians needed it most, ABB launched fundraising efforts for Food Banks Canada, to ensure people across the country had access to the most essential of needs during a challenging time. In just one week, our team raised $95,980 for Food Banks Canada. More recently, ABB donated $5,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to support their crisis relief efforts.

  • ABB Canada’s donations help the Canadian Red Cross respond to disasters and emergencies from coast to coast.
  • ABB Canada employees contributed $95,980 to Food Banks Canada, allowing to continue their critical work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • ABB Canada became one of the first companies to offer staffing resources and funding in support of the federal government’s Industry for Vaccination (IFV) program.

In 2021, ABB became one of the first companies to offer staffing resources and funding in support of the federal government’s Industry for Vaccination (IFV) program. Under this initiative, ABB Canada is contributing to an accelerated countrywide vaccination rollout to help reduce pressure on the health care system.

Health and wellness

Building healthier workplaces together

ABB Canada recognizes that a healthy workforce is key to a successful workplace, and as a result, health and wellness are at the forefront of all that we do. This is why we partner with HealthPartners and other organizations to promote health and wellness. In support of the communities in which we live and work, we empower our employees to support and give to organizations such as Quebec’s Grand défi Pierre Lavoie. For several years, ABB’s leadership team and employees have committed to the 3-day, 1000-km cycling marathon to raise funds for the charity and to promote the adoption of a healthy lifestyle.

  • Health and wellness are at the forefront of everything we do.
  • ABB recognizes that healthy employees are the key to an effective workplace.
