Chengdu Tianfu International Airport takes off with ABB technology

Chengdu, CHINA, JUNE 28, 2021 - To drive energy efficiency and performance, ABB installs intelligent building control systems at Chengdu’s new greenfield airport which will serve over 50 million people.

When it opens on June 27, 2021, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (Tianfu Airport), will become a new gateway and major international transport center in the Sichuan Province, and will play an important role in accelerating the connected and integrated development of the Chengdu-Chongqing City Cluster.

With three new runways and two terminals, Tianfu Airport will operate all international routes departing from Chengdu and when complete is expected to service an annual capacity of 90 million passengers and 2 million tons of cargo per year, making it the second largest airport in China.

Construction of the airport was driven by the core principles of ‘safe, green, smart and cultural’, with a requirement to deliver first rate passenger experience, with safety and comfort at the heart of the project.

To cope with increased large passenger and freight loads, while achieving energy saving and emission reduction targets, installing intelligent and digital technologies were key. As a global leader in electrification solutions, ABB was appointed to provide Tianfu Airport with intelligent building control system and smart power products which deliver reliable electrical distribution and high levels of energy efficiency.

James Zhao, lead business manager of Electrification Business Area in China, said, “ABB has a proven track record as the partner of choice for aviation clients. We are extremely proud to be part of this world-class airport project. Leveraging our smart building automation and reliable power distribution capabilites, we are helping Tianfu Airport to deliver a safe and efficient airport, by saving energy, reducing emissions and promoting a sustainable future.”

ABB installed its ABB i-bus® KNX intelligent building control system in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which includes over 19,000 switch circuits, 600 dimmers and 4,000 sensors. The intelligent lighting control system regulates and manages all lighting facilities in the terminals in a user-friendly way. More importantly, it gives the airport’s facilities managers access to the data they need to assess performance and make informed decisions to drive energy savings of up to 30 percent.

In the two terminals, ABB i-HD panel, VD4 vacuum circuit breaker, Relion® 615 series protection relay for feeder protection, MV current and voltage transformers and other products from ABB are successfully deployed.

To drive reliable electrical distribution across the airport, ABB’s ring main unit (RMU) is deployed in the apron lighting system, the airfield’s underpass and the EV charging station, to fully enhance the power supply reliability. In addition, the extensive use of products including ABB Emax 2 air circuit breakers, Tmax XT molded case circuit breakers and contactors in the airport’s data center, operations command and field service buildings help to ensure the stable operation of the airport electrical distribution system.

ABB has participated in several prestigious airport construction and upgrade projects in China, including Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing Daxing International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Wuhan Tianhe International Airport.
