Kronos Sathorn Tower, located in Bangkok’s central business district area on North Sathorn Road, is an ultra-luxurious 30-storey tower with 22,501 sqm for office and retail spaces.
As one of the highest growth segments, commercial buildings require a very high level of energy efficiency and reliability to optimize building performance. Energy distributions systems are designed to ensure that a building’s lighting and electrical devices, like office computers and air-conditioning, are reliably powered, to improve the control of energy and loads and ensure that businesses can run smoothly.
ABB delivered a single, comprehensive solution for a safe and reliable electrical distribution system to maximize energy efficiency and guarantee reliable power supply for Kronos. The project scope consisted of medium- and low-voltage products including ABB’s Gas-insulated compact switchgear SafePlus 24kV, System pro E power main distribution switchboard and Emax 2 circuit breaker, as well as service operations.
SafePlus is a medium-voltage (MV) compact SF6-insulated switchgear for secondary distribution up to 40.5 kV. The switchgear has unique flexibility due to its extendibility and the possible combination of fully modular and semi-modular configurations. It is a completely sealed system designed to improve safety and reliability. The stainless steel tank contains all live parts and switching functions to reduce the risk of injury and the sealed steel tank with constant atmospheric conditions ensures a high level of reliability and a virtually maintenance-free system.
ABB’s System pro E power is an innovative main distribution switchboard solution that has been designed for improved flexibility and simple busbar connections. The switchboard is reliable in extreme conditions and can stand a rated short-time withstand current (Icw) up to 120kA and a Maximum rated current up to 6300A. ABB was able to supply Kronos with a System pro E power solution tailor-made to meet the requirement of safe and reliable power distribution with a space saving switchboard that complies with international standards. Because all of System pro E power’s components are designed for quick assembly and in full synergy with all other ABB’s low-voltage equipment, it optimized the work required prior to commissioning.
The Emax 2 smart circuit breaker embeds more functionalities to become the all-in-one solution to manage the luxury tower’s low-voltage distribution. It sets a new benchmark for the needs of today and tomorrow, matching all the new grid requirements thanks to its distinctive features. It can be integrated perfectly into all automation and energy management systems to improve productivity and energy consumption and to carry out remote service. The version supplied for the Kronos project has a touch screen with multi-languages including Thai, offering an easy and intuitive user experience, while embedded Bluetooth technology allows seamless interaction through the EPiC mobile app. It can manage a range of grid conditions, thanks to its advanced functions.
“ABB’s solution ensures best-in-class quality, solid reliability and coordination of circuit breakers for our prestigious Kronos project. We also appreciate the optimal efficiency of the solution,” said Chawanvit Teeraoutachawin, Senior Manager, Thai Obayashi Corporation Ltd., Thailand’s leading construction contractor and the main contractor of Kronos project.
Gianandrea Bruzzone, Country Managing Director, ABB Thailand said: “With leading electrification and digital solutions, ABB is enabling buildings to improve operation, maintenance efficiency and be more sustainable. Our comprehensive solution for the ultra-luxurious Kronos project, including the Pro-E switchboard and Emax2 circuit breaker, is world class in terms of innovation, reliability, and efficiency. It helps to reduce equipment footprint up to 30% which mean less system cost and more usable space for end user. We are delighted to be a partner in this prestigious project.”
