ABB supports Beijing’s “Two Zones” construction for green transformation and high-quality development

  • ABB Group Chairman Peter Voser delivered a video speech at the themed event “Beijing Day” of 2021 CIFTIS
  • Contribute to China’s green transformation and high-quality growth by accelerating digital innovation
  • Further align ABB’s core businesses with local market demand and China’s carbon neutrality pledge

During the 2021 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS 2021), Peter Voser, Chairman of ABB Group, was invited to deliver a video speech at the “Beijing Day” themed event for the first anniversary of the “Two Zones” on September 3. With around 300 participants from the Ministry of Commerce, Beijing Municipal Government, embassies, international organizations and multinational companies, the event focuses on the development of the “Two Zones” which is on the top agenda of Beijing government. Lars Eckerlein, General Manager of ABB (China) Limited and Winnie Dong, Head of Government Relations and Public Affairs, ABB China were invited to attend the CIFTIS summit and the “Beijing Day” event.

The construction of Beijing’s “Two Zones”, namely the Integrated National Demonstration Zone for Opening Up the Services Sector and the China (Beijing) Pilot Free Trade Zone featuring sci-tech innovation, opening-up of the services sector, and digital economy, was kicked off during CIFTIS 2020. The initiative serves as a platform of high-standard opening-up for the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and explores reform and opening-up at a higher level.

As one of the first multinationals to invest and develop in Beijing, as an inaugural member of IBLAC Beijing, and as an active participant of CIFTIS in Beijing, ABB has been paying close attention to the city’s development and future planning. “We highly appreciate the ‘Two Zones’ initiative, a new impetus to Beijing’s innovation-driven development and the new round of opening-up. It will provide a wider platform for technological innovation, the digital economy and cross-boundary collaboration, better leveraging Beijing’s rich resources and strong strategic advantages.” Said Peter Voser in his speech at the summit.

Scientific and technological innovation is the key to high-quality development. With one of the most fertile environments for innovation in China, Beijing is vigorously promoting comprehensive innovation with sci-tech innovation as the core, aiming to build the municipality into a benchmark city for global digital economy and a center of international science and technology innovation.

For years, ABB has been promoting digital innovation and working with partners to actively support Beijing's infrastructure construction and digital upgrading. For example, ABB supported the South to North Water Diversion Project in Beijing with digital remote monitoring and preventive maintenance service to help ensure its reliable operation; helped improve water supply efficiency and power reliability of Beijing Daxing International Airport; applied the new generation digital technology in the renovation project of Beijing Fengtai Railway Station; deployed ABB Ability™ Mobile Gas Leak Detection System in Beijing and many other cities of China; and participated in the constructin of various stadiums and infrastructure of Beijing and Zhangjiakou for the 2022 Winter Olympics, supporting the goal of “High-tech Olympics” and “Green Olympics”.

China’s 14th Five-Year Plan outlines a new growth story under China’s net-zero commitment, with the low-carbon transition acting as a new driver of growth. “Sustainable growth is the only feasible path forward, and it is one of the areas where the world can reach broad consensus and strengthen cooperation. In this process, technology innovation is already playing – and will continue to play – a critical role. Electrification, automation and digital technologies hold the key to the sustainable future,” Said Peter Voser, “As a global technology leader, we are accelerating our pace to help reduce energy use and increase energy efficiency in industry, buildings and transport, by working together with our customers, partners, local communities and government.”

During CIFTIS, Zhao Yongzhan, Lead Business Manager of ABB Electrification in China will attend the 2021 Green Development Forum on September 5. He will share ABB’s sustainable strategy and cases on driving carbon neutrality through innovative technologies and will discuss the feasible paths to accelerate green and sustainable development.

With 2030 sustainability strategy, ABB partners with the customers and suppliers to enable a low-carbon society, preserve resources and promote social progress. ABB aims to be carbon-neutral by 2030 and support customers in reducing their annual CO2 emissions by at least 100 megatons.

On our way towards the ambitious science-based targets, ABB further commits to electrifying its vehicle fleet by 2030, sourcing 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030 and establishing energy efficiency targets, including the systematic use of energy management systems.

ABB continuously reduces carbon footprint at its own manufacturing sites. Last year, ABB’s two factories in Beijing - ABB LV Installation Materials Co., Ltd. Beijing and ABB Beijing Drive Systems Co., Ltd. were certified as national Green Factories. In March 2021, the former further unveiled a new solar power generation and renewable energy integration system which can deliver approximately 420 MWh per year, reducing the annual greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 400 tons. ABB’s electric vehicle chargers and sophisticated energy management software systems deliver a holistic energy efficiency solution, utilizing building automation and digitalization throughout the plant.

China is ABB’s second-largest market worldwide, and Beijing is a very important city for ABB’s development in China. In 1979, ABB set up a permanent office in Beijing; in 1994, ABB China’s headquarters was moved to Beijing, and one year later, the holding company – ABB (China) Ltd. was established in Beijing. ABB is continuously investing in Beijing to upgrade its manufacturing and R&D facilities and to align its core businesses with local market demand, ready for making further contributions to Beijing’s green transformation and high-quality development.
