ABB to power Norway’s new Government Building Complex in Oslo

  • ABB provides complete high-voltage system and power distribution
  • Enables safe, efficient, reliable, and sustainable operation

The new government building complex in the capital city of Oslo is one of the largest construction projects in Norway through the ages. It will provide safe and good workspaces for the ministries and an open and green urban space for the inhabitants. Gross building space is planned for approx. 125,000 square meters, of which approximately 37,000 square meters are underground. In addition, approximately 37,000 square meters of existing buildings are being rehabilitated. Expected completion is 2029.

ABB has signed contracts with Statsbygg, the Norwegian government’s building commissioner, property manager and developer to provide high voltage power system and low voltage power distribution system and associated engineering and project services to the new government building complex.

“We are proud to be selected as supplier of the power systems for this vital and historic project,” says Per Erik Holsten, Country Managing Director of ABB in Norway. “We have previously signed the contract for electronic security systems for the new government building complex. The contracts show that competence built up through large industrial projects with integrated project teams, design, engineering, and project management is invaluable, also for such infrastructure projects.”

ABB's high voltage power system will ensure efficient and secure supply of electric power to all electrical installations throughout the building complex. It includes complete control, monitoring, and control systems.

ABB's power distribution system includes electrical switchboards, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and rails that supply all electrical installations with electrical power

The high voltage power system and the power distribution system will interface with a number of other contracts, systems and players, including building automation and the aforementioned security systems.

The work will be carried out in separate interaction contracts for each main system over two phases:

  • Phase 1: Establishment of a common understanding for the implementation of detailed design and execution
  • Phase 2: Detailed design, production and execution
