Fast deployment of ABB digital solution ensures power availability to a Centrin Data Systems data center

ABB installs a digital solution for a large-scale advanced data center in East China with over 80 percent faster commissioning and reduced on-site wiring resulting in 40 percent reduction in project delivery time.

With the continuous advancement of China's digital economy transformation, as well as the application of a new generation of communication technology and the implementation of IoT, the average annual growth rate of racks on the market in the past five years has reached 30 percent.

The Centrin Data Systems Kunshan Jinqiao Data Center is a large-scale advanced data center in East China, which provides data center operation and maintenance services for leading Internet companies. In 2020, the company’s Kunshan Data Center was included in the Batch of National New Industrial Demonstration Bases by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, and awarded the Tier IV design certificate by Uptime Institute. The facility will provide potential customers with at least 25,600 high-spec data center racks.

For the data center’s computer room, ABB developed a digital solution to satisfy the power supply requirements. This includes medium-voltage (MV) switchgear UniGear ZS1 with a GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Events) communication-enabled automatic switching solution with advanced IEC 61850 standard-based digital communication between the switchgear panels with Relion® protection relays.

The construction of the computer room was an important strategic project for the data center, requiring 216 MV switchgear panels to be provided with a short delivery time. With strong technical strength and expertise, ABB provided the customer with an innovative solution, which included 500 mm panel width UniGear ZS1 switchgear, which helped reduce the footprint by about 25 percent. Moreover, the delivery of two panels, pre-assembled in the factory, also helped to substantially reduce site installation time.

The project included an advanced automatic switching solution with ABB’s programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and Relion 615 series protection relays for IEC 61850 standard-based digital communication and GOOSE messaging. Compared to a conventional solution, that requires hundreds of control cables to be installed, the new digital approach reduced wiring on site as well as the commissioning time by over 80 percent. Working closely with the customer, project delivery time was reduced by 40 percent.
