Remotely controllable compact DC wallbox, capable of delivering high levels of power directly to a vehicle’s battery, will feature at flagship Munich show.
Visitors to eMove 360° in Munich, Germany will be able to witness firsthand the superior charging qualities of ABB’s new compact 24kW DC wallbox.
As with the ABB range of AC chargers, the new DC fast charger is ideal for use at offices, dealerships and public parking places. But, because the DC charger delivers 24 kW power directly to the vehicle’s battery, it allows for a faster charging time than the typical on-board converter rated at 6 kW.
Frank Mühlon, Head of ABB’s Global Business for Electric Vehicle Charging, explained: “When charging with AC equipment, power is often limited by the vehicle’s onboard converter. These converters are usually rated 3.3, 6 or 7 kW and any additional power the charging station could provide, remains unused.
“The DC wallbox has a high 60A output current delivering power directly to the battery, bypassing the limitations of the converter and providing a fast and efficient charge.
“We expect the DC wallbox to support greater adoption of e-mobility solutions by private vehicle owners and businesses alike and are proud to be driving further progress on the road to zero emission transport.”
The ABB DC wallbox is available with single or twin outlets, supporting both CCS and CHAdeMO standards. Day to day operation is simple thanks to a seven-inch full-color, daylight readable touchscreen display. Key functions include: starting and stopping of charge sessions, progress indication during charging, tariff information, help menus, language selection, and PIN code access.
With an output range of up to 920V DC, it is fully future-proofed to handle the next generation of high-voltage electric vehicles.
The smart DC wallbox uses ABB Ability™ Connected Services to integrate with existing IT structures, enabling authentication, integration with back offices and payment platforms, monitoring, remote diagnostics and repair, as well as over-the-air updates and upgrades.
Other optional smart features include: Radio Frequency Information Device (RFID) and on-screen PIN code authorization; input current limiting software to match site requirements; web tools for statistics, configuration, access management; and customized branding possibilities.
The DC wallbox will be available to view on stand 306, Hall A5 at eMove 360°, Munich, Germany from Tuesday 16 to Thursday 18 October.
