ABB to support Mexico’s peak summer demand

  • New Wärtsilä engine power plants will relieve peak pressure on the Mexican grid
  • ABB will supply 46 large high voltage generators as well as switchgear, control systems, drives and turbochargers to Mexico

The technology group Wärtsilä,  a global leader in innovative technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets, is building a pair of engine power plants for Mexico. The two plants will run continually through the summer, when temperatures can exceed +50°C, to support the peak demand for electricity. For the rest of the year, the plants will operate a grid balancing service.

ABB will supply the large high voltage (HV) generators and associated equipment needed for the two plants. They comprise a 400-megawatt (MW) facility and a 200 MW plant.

In addition to the 46 large generators, ABB will deliver medium voltage (MV) switchgear for power distribution, power plant controls systems and drives. ABB turbochargers will also be used at one of the plants. Both plants are scheduled to commence operating at partial capacity as soon as summer 2022. The projects will be completed during a second phase and become fully operational by summer 2023.
