Arc fault events in electrical installations represent a serious risk to operating personnel and may cause severe damage to the installation itself. Time is the most critical factor when it comes to minimizing the effects of an arc fault event. Already arc burning times > 100ms typically create open fire inside of the equipment.
LV equipment that has been qualified according to IEC TR 61641 usually manages to limit the impact of an arc fault to the inside however damages can cause severe downtime as parts of the installation might have to be renewed. To further minimize those risks our LV switchgear system type SEN Plus has been tested with the ABB Arc Guard System™ TVOC-2 which is now also available for our business partner worldwide.
The TVOC-2 is an active arc flash mitigation system that helps to significantly increase the safety for the operator and to minimize the downtime of the switchgear by reducing the arc burning time in case of an arcing event. Severe damages like cable- or copper fires can be avoided.
The TVOC-2 is detecting the arc by light in less than 1ms. The air circuit breaker, in our case the Emax2, will then interrupt the fault in around 35ms. To avoid unintentional tripping due to strong light which is not caused by an arc the TVOC-2 can be used in combination with the CSU-2 current sensing unit.
SEN Plus with TVOC-2 is now supported in our SEN Plus Pro configurator. Our SEN Plus Panel Builder Documentation provides details on how to install the system.
