Empowering Egyptian standards for imported electric motors and matching them with latest international standards in cooperation with the General Organization for Export and Import Control - GOEIC
This cooperation comes in accordance with the terms of a previously signed memorandum of understanding between ABB and the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry. The MOU allows cooperation in various initiatives, including developing specifications for the manufacture and import of energy efficient electric motors within the framework of the "Production with smart technology and energy efficient" program implemented by The Ministry in cooperation with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). This laboratory is part of ABB's social responsibility projects, supported by ABB’s Drives and Motors business, contributing USD 120,000 to purchase and install the necessary equipment and supplies needed for the establishment of this laboratory, in addition to providing test benches for motors with a capacity of up to 75 kilowatts. This initiative will highly contribute to defining international technical specifications for electric motors in Egypt and the development of quality control for this type of motors all while establishing an integrated matrix to control exports and imports according to international standards.
From his side, Engineer Ahmed Samir, Minister of Trade and Industry, confirmed that upgrading the technical capabilities and laboratory components of the affiliated bodies and agencies is a top priority of the ministry, noting that the opening of the new laboratory comes within the framework of the Egyptian state’s endeavors to increase the competitiveness of the industrial sector to keep pace with global industrial developments and trends towards the use of advanced solutions and technologies.
“Egypt seeks to increase the competitiveness of the industrial sector, as it is one of the most important sectors that can be relied upon in the development process because of its ability to positively impact other vital sectors. In light of current global trends, leaning towards the use of advanced solutions and technologies, especially in the energy-efficient electric motors, is crucial. Thanks to our cooperation with ABB, we have been able to upgrade the Egyptian standard specifications and work on their compatibility with their international pears, which should stimulate investment opportunities while reducing energy consumption and losses, improving industrial productivity and mitigating the impact of high energy prices as a result of the gradual decrease in subsidies”, said Eng. Ismail Gaber, Chairman of the General Organization for Export and Import Control, highlighting this cooperation.
“The national strategy for climate change in Egypt 2050 is based on the presence of a number of opportunities during the current stage that Egypt must benefit from, especially in favor of the energy sector. ABB Taking part in this direction by donating a specialized measurement laboratory for imported motors is a step towards achieving a part of this strategy as a world leader in the manufacture of energy-efficient motors that comply with the highest international standards”, said Ahmed Hammad, Country Holding Officer, ABB Egypt.
Production with smart technology and energy efficient program, which was launched in 2015, aims to increase the competitiveness of the industrial sector by raising energy efficiency in industrial processes. The program has achieved positive results, including the development of a standard specification for electric motors energy levels and the designing of a roadmap for the local manufacturing of components of energy-saving electric motors.
“Industrial activities and processes consume nearly 40 percent of total generated electricity, according to the International Energy Agency. So the potential for energy savings in industries and utilities is enormous, especially in systems applying electric motors. We are extremely pleased to be part of the Ministry of Industry’s program directed to the use of smart technology and energy efficiency through the establishment and development of this specialized laboratory, as per our mutual memorandum of cooperation. This cooperation will allow regular exchange of experiences and advanced technology and will contribute to the efforts deployed in reducing energy consumption and improving its efficiency to meet the future energy challenges in Egypt”, said Ahmed Hassan, Head of Motion Business Area ABB Egypt, North & Central Africa, commenting on ABB's participation in this program.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Trade and Industry had issued a law in 2020 stipulating that all imported engines must be tested in terms of energy efficiency levels and verified in accordance with the Egyptian standard specifications. This new law, which includes the three-phased squirrel cage induction motors with capacities of 0.75 kilowatts and up to 375 kilowatts, binds producers and importers of electric motors adhere to energy efficiency ratings of no less than (IE3), when importing or manufacturing these types of motors.
