ABB collaborates with Tarsheed to enhance energy efficiency mandates in Qatar

• ABB Qatar hosts an Energy Efficiency Symposium with industry leaders
• Collaboration underscores shared focus on reducing carbon emissions of operations and empowering industrial decarbonization

ABB Qatar hosted an Energy Efficiency Symposium yesterday in collaboration with KAHRAMAA, represented by the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency “Tarsheed”. Tarsheed is the national program mandated by electricity and water consumption law no. 20 for the year 2015 to regulate and monitor energy efficiency and consumption in the State of Qatar. The event was joined by leaders from Qatar Shell GTL, Petrotec, N-KOM, Metito and Qatar Foundation to discuss energy efficiency challenges and opportunities.

Launched in March 2021 by ABB, the #energyefficiencymovement is a multi-stakeholder initiative to raise awareness and spur action to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions, and combat climate change. Companies are invited to join the movement and make a public pledge as a way of inspiring others to take action.

Energy efficiency is taking on greater urgency throughout industry as companies look for opportunities to decarbonize amid soaring energy costs and pressure from customers, employees and governments to make strides on sustainability. A recent survey commissioned by ABB found that energy efficiency is clearly top of mind for executives around the world. It revealed that 89 percent of industrial leaders surveyed will increase investment in energy efficiency of their operations in the coming five years, with 52 percent aiming to achieve net-zero emissions in that timeframe.

“ABB #energyefficiencymovement is completely aligned with Tarsheed’s vision. Industrial activities and processes consume nearly 45 percent of total generated electricity, according to the International Energy Agency. So the potential for energy savings in industries and utilities is enormous, especially in systems utilizing electric motors. We are extremely pleased to be part of the state of Qatar’s initiative to enhance energy efficiency mandates and with more companies joining the #energyefficiencymovement, we’ll be able to achieve significant results” said Charbel Zouein, Local Business Manager, Motion Business Area, ABB Qatar.

“The path to an energy efficient future depends on governments and industry to adopt the latest motor technology, along with the drives that will save even more energy, as quickly as possible” mentioned Ahmed Radwan, Lead Business Manager, ABB Motion Business area, Middle East & Africa region.

KAHRAMAA is the sole transmission and distribution system owner and operator (TDSOO) for the electricity and water sector in Qatar. “KAHRAMAA” launched “Tarsheed” in 2012 under the patronage of HH the Emir to promote, regulate, display best technical and behavioral practices for conservation and energy efficiency in the state of Qatar,” commented Eng. Rashid Al Rahimi, Conservation and Energy Efficiency manager in KAHRAMAA. He added “Large-scale growth creates increased demand for energy and for an efficient energy infrastructure. That’s why, the government has set goals to diversify energy sources and achieve energy efficiency measures through “Tarsheed”.   As part of its second phase from 2018 to 2021, Tarsheed’s initiatives and projects have resulted in financial return of more than QR 4 bn for the country”

Also Eng. Nasser Al-Kuzaei, Head of Conservation Technology in KAHRAMAA said “KAHRAMAA, through Tarsheed, took initiatives by completing its second Energy Efficiency Roadmap strategy which has been completed in the second quarter of 2022. It targets to decrease per capita consumption of electricity and water while not affecting lifestyle and demand side of Qatar’s population”. He added “We are pleased to partner with ABB in launching this #energyefficiencymovement to promote best practices and tools for energy efficiency and technology.”

For its part, ABB reduced greenhouse gas emissions from its operations in 2021 by some 28 percent on a year-over-year basis. In its comprehensive Sustainability strategy 2030, ABB has affirmed it will reach carbon neutrality by decade’s end. Beyond its own operations, ABB has also committed to help its customers in reducing their annual COemissions by at least 100 megatons by 2030, the equivalent of removing 30 million combustion cars from the roads each year. With partners like Microsoft, Deutsche Post DHL Group and Alfa Laval, the ABB Energy Efficiency Movement brings together an ecosystem of like-minded industry leaders to accelerate efforts in decarbonization.
