International technology company Wärtsilä joins ABB’s Energy Efficiency Movement

Wärtsilä, an international leader in innovative technology and lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets, is joining ABB’s Energy Efficiency Movement. Wärtsilä is committed to carbon neutrality by 2030, which supports the goals of the Energy Efficiency Movement.

The Energy Efficiency Movement, launched by ABB, brings together an ecosystem to accelerate efforts to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), energy efficiency can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40% over the next 20 years. Half of this reduction will come from the industrial sector.

Wärtsilä leads the transition towards a 100% renewable energy future. For its own operations, the company is committed to carbon neutrality by 2030 through its "Set for 30" initiative, including research, development and engine testing activities at the Sustainable Technology Hub in Vaasa, as well as purchased energy.

In addition, by 2030, Wärtsilä will offer its customers a product portfolio which will be ready for zero-carbon fuels. This will contribute to the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels in the energy and marine sectors.

“The energy transition is a multidimensional issue, and its realization requires experts from different sectors of society and business to work together. The Energy Efficiency Movement is an excellent example of a commitment to collaboration in our industry. Our balancing solutions, namely engine technology and energy storage,  enable higher total efficiency by optimizing existing fleet of generation. Besides this, Wärtsilä also develops technology to enable zero-carbon fuels," says Kenneth Engblom, Vice President Europe and Africa, Wärtsilä Energy.

Zero-emission solutions for the future

With its existing portfolio, Wärtsilä is already supporting its customers’ transition to carbon neutral alternatives such as biofuels and synthetic methane. Wärtsilä’s engines can also be fueled with hydrogen-natural gas blends containing up to 25% hydrogen. An engine and power plant concept for the use of clean hydrogen is expected to be ready by 2025.

“We have been working closely with Wärtsilä on sustainable solutions for the marine and energy industries for decades. Wärtsilä has ambitious carbon neutrality targets up to 2030, as does ABB, and together we can contribute to a more sustainable future. It is an honor to welcome Wärtsilä to the Energy Efficiency Movement,” says Pekka Tiitinen, Managing Director, ABB Finland.

ABB’s Energy Efficiency Movement, launched in March 2021, aims to mitigate climate change by increasing awareness and encouraging action to reduce energy use and carbon emissions. Companies around the world are invited to join the movement and make a public pledge as a way to inspire others to take action.

Wärtsilä supports its customers on their decarbonization journey by developing market-leading technologies. These include current and future-fuel enabled grid balancing power plants, hybrid solutions, and energy storage and optimization technologies, including the GEMS digital energy management system. Wärtsilä Energy's lifecycle services are designed to increase efficiency, promote reliability and guarantee operational performance.
