ABB Energy Industries is working with Técnicas Reunidas, to deliver automation and digital solutions for Endesa’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage facility at Los Barrios, Cadiz in Spain.
Harnessing ABB AbilityTM System 800xA distributed control system (DCS), Endesa will be able to constantly monitor and analyze plant productivity, maximizing asset performance, and optimizing process efficiency in real-time. Using this continuous stream of data, the company, in line with its sustainability plan, will be able to make more accurate, informed decisions to drive efficient use of energy across the terminal.
ABB will also deliver several systems aimed at ensuring the facility operates at the highest safety levels including an Emergency Shutdown System (ESD).
Spain is the sixth largest LNG importer in the world, and the number one LNG importer in Europe, with over 12 million tons of LNG imports year-to-date. The country has the continent's largest LNG storage capacity, as well as six LNG import terminals.1 Once complete, the new Endesa facility will add a further storage capacity of 10,000 m3 of LNG, making it the top LNG bunkering port in the country.
"Our early engagement with Endesa in the design engineering phase ensured that we fully understood their needs and requirements. As a result, we have worked collaboratively with Técnicas Reunidas and its subsidiary Heymo to build an optimal solution," said Roger Farré, EPC2 Account Manager at ABB Energy Industries.
The start-up of Los Barrios LNG plant is expected to take place during the first half of 2023.
