To foster a deeper understanding of the latest in industrial technologies and sustainable innovation, an exclusive group of Lithuanian industry experts participated in a two-day visit to ABB’s advanced production and testing facilities in Estonia and Finland. The program included an intimate tour of ABB Drives, Motors & Generators facilities, ABB Motion Service workshop, as well as expert-led technical presentations. One highlight amongst many was a behind-the-scenes tour aboard the Tallink MyStar ferry between Tallinn and Helsinki. The MyStar is an advanced, low-emission shuttle vessel powered by ABB technologies.
Opening the doors of ABB facilities in Jüri, Estonia
The journey began in Jüri, Estonia, where guests explored the key ABB sites including the Motion Service Workshop, Drives Factory, Drives Reliability Center and the Large Motors & Generators Factory.
Among the highlights for the visitors in Jüri was observing how wind generators are refurbished to extend their lifecycle in the ABB Motion Service Workshop. This includes rotor and stator replacements as well as full factory-supported upgrades. ABB ensures long-term reliability through certified spare parts, OEM expertise, and decades of experience in generator refurbishment.
Meanwhile, at ABB Drives Reliability Center, it’s the rigorous ABB testing protocols were showcased to visitors. These protocols simulate extreme environmental conditions such as heat, humidity, vibration, and electrical stress to ensure optimal performance across diverse applications, from industrial plants and data centers to marine vessels.
Finally, the Large Motors and Generators factory - spanning 23,884 m² and employing over 300 professionals from 10 nationalities. It specializes in high-performance motors and generators for sectors such as marine, mining, energy, and data centers. With a 100% export rate, it serves as a key component hub for ABB’s European operations. The factory’s commitment to sustainability (as well as the overall ABB site in Jüri) includes solar parks, energy-efficient systems, and compliance with international quality and environmental standards.
Exploring ABB facilities in Helsinki, Finland
The group of experts then travelled to Helsinki on the Tallink MyStar ferry. Over in Finland, the group visited production sites for low-voltage drives and high-voltage motors, along withtesting areas, quality laboratories, the high-voltage motor demo room, and the Motion OEM Hub, where customer-specific solutions are developed.
Whilst at the Drives factory, guests explored a wide range of drive technologies, spanning voltage ranges from 230 to 690 V. These cover general-purpose, industrial, specific-purpose drives for HVAC, water and waste water applications and machinery applications.
A visit to the Customer & Supplier Investigation (CSI) Lab offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at ABB’s advanced failure analysis capabilities. Using advanced tools such as X-ray imaging, 3D scanning, microscopy and ultrasound slicing, the lab ensures product quality and reliability through root cause investigations of field and supplier-related issues.
The visit to ABB’s facilities in Jüri and Helsinki was impressive. It exceeded all my expectations and provided valuable insights into ABB’s technologies and operations. The warm welcome and well-organized program made the experience memorable, - said Vismantas, tour participant from a Lithuanian manufacturing company.
Technology in Motion: aboard the Tallink MyStar ferry
The journey between Estonia and Finland included an exclusive tour on the Tallink MyStar ferry, which gave the travelling group a chance to see ABB technology at work in real conditions. The 212-meter Shuttle vessel launched in 2022, carries up to 2,800 passengers daily between Tallinn and Helsinki at service speed of 27 knots. Powered by ABB drives, motors, and generators, MyStar exemplifies energy-efficient, low-emission maritime transport.
Guests were treated to a visit to the engine room and captain’s bridge, witnessing firsthand how ABB’s marine technologies deliver performance, reliability, and sustainability in real-world conditions.
Building trust through transparency
Transparency and collaboration remain vital in driving sustainable industrial practices. By opening its doors and offering customers direct access to its technologies and operations, ABB empowers informed decisions and strengthens long-term partnerships. This visit reflects ABB’s ongoing commitment to shaping a low-carbon future through innovation, reliability, and shared progress.
