ABB: a key player at Power-Gen Africa 2015

Showcasing new technologies for microgrids, plant electrification, power and water automation

ABB participates at Power Gen Africa 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa to exhibit cutting-edge products and systems for African electricity markets and to participate in high-level meetings and discussions about current trends and developments in African electricity markets.

Among the many products and solutions on display at Power-Gen Africa this year are ABB’s industry-leading integrated instrumentation, control and electrical systems, featuring a comprehensive power and automation portfolio for power and water industries. Through integrated systems engineering, ABB’s electrical balance of plant solution incorporates all electrical, automation and instrumentation systems in one unified platform, ensuring plants run efficiently, safely and reliably.

Power Gen Africa 2015 will also feature the launch of ABB’s Symphony Plus SD Series: the latest addition to the Symphony Plus S+ Control and I/O family. The green automation solution reduces energy consumption, lowers hardware requirements and withstands extreme operating conditions.

A report by the consultancy, McKinsey&Company, earlier this year noted the total potential power generating capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa alone is a staggering 10 terawatts (TW), including gas, hydro, geothermal, wind and solar generation.

Events like Power-Gen Africa are crucial for planning, building and improving the continent’s electrical infrastructure.  ABB’s strong solar offering will highlight ABB’s strengths in photovoltaic (PV) automation, modularized standard solutions, remote monitoring and SCADA. ABB solutions for PV power plants are designed to maximize plant performance and provide cost-effective and speedy project execution, supporting customers in all engineering needs from panel connection to grid compliance.

Keeping pace with the growing African power generation market, ABB recently won an order worth more than $160 million from Eskom, South Africa's national electricity provider, to supply control systems, software and instrumentation for the 4,800 megawatt (MW) Kusile coal-fired power station under construction in South Africa.

The project further strengthens ABB’s leading position as a provider of advanced automation and software solutions to electricity utilities globally and in the African region, with systems already installed in Egypt, Algeria, South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
