ABB helps Harbin Electric win power plant order in Turkey

Harbin Electric International has selected ABB as its plant automation partner for a major new supercritical power plant project in Turkey.

Turkey is one of the fastest growing electricity markets in the world. Power generation capacity doubled between 2002 and 2012 to around 57,000 megawatts (MW). The government’s target is to almost double this again to 100,000 MW by 2023 as part of its efforts to make Turkey one of the ten largest economies in the world.

One of the biggest and technologically most advanced power plant projects in this growth program is the 1,320 MW Zetes 3 coal-fired power plant on the Black Sea coast. Scheduled to start production in 2016, Zetes 3 will use high-efficiency supercritical technology and be the third and largest plant built by the owners, Eren Enerji.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor responsible for executing the 33-month project is Harbin Electric International, one of the largest power plant equipment manufacturers and contractors in China.

Harbin Electric selected ABB as its plant automation partner for Zetes 3 at an early stage of the bidding process in order to gain maximum benefits from ABB’s automation expertise and global automation resources. The two companies have partnered on many power plant projects in recent years, with ABB now one of Harbin Electric’s main automation and electrical balance of plant suppliers.

Meeting EPC and end-user requirements

ABB is supplying a Symphony® Plus total plant automation system that meets Harbin Electric’s requirements for on time delivery, cost-effectiveness and ease of installation. ABB is also responsible for system design, engineering, installation and commissioning.

The solution will provide end-user Eren Enerji with a complete and fully integrated automation system that incorporates boiler and turbine control and protection, generator and electrical system monitoring, and desulfurization, and the entire balance of plant.

The unified automation platform for boiler and turbine control, will improve the operational efficiency and flexibility of the customer asset.

In addition, ABB SIL3 certified instrumentation for turbine emergency trip system, increased operational safety, while complying with European standards.

To ensure that the ABB solution was fully compliant with end-user requirements, ABB worked closely with Eren Enerji throughout the design stage of the process.
ABB is a leading supplier of integrated automation and electrical balance of plant solutions for renewable and conventional power generation. Symphony Plus is ABB’s flagship automation platform for the power generation and water industries. It is designed to maximize plant efficiency and reliability through automation, integration, and optimization of the entire plant.
