Large scale off-grid hydrogen production from wind energy

There is an urgent need to expand the energy production from renewable sources and decarbonize the economy. However, European TSOs has already experienced increased challenges to maintain grid stability from the high share of installed renewable power. One promising alternative is to convert renewable power directly into hydrogen, and possibly into ammonia or e-fuels at a suitable location or at later stage. In a study conducted by ABB, a 100 MW electrolysis plant with 100% renewable power has been studied. The study results show that it is possible to run such a large-scale hydrogen system fed by 100% wind power in off grid mode. The variations in the wind pose great challenges for stabilizing and balancing both active and reactive power. However, it is found that through careful system design and control implementation, it is possible to regulate the system with only a modest size of battery capacity.

Steinar holds an M.Sc in electrical engineering and is currently a Senior Power System Design Engineer and Technical Lead PPSim studies with ABB Energy Industries based in Oslo. He has both led and conducted several technical studies and the design of new energy systems incorporating wind, hydrogen and storage in both off-grid and on-grid applications. As well as integration of wind or grid power into existing or new offshore gas processing facilities.

Diogo Costa is the Offshore Wind Sales Lead for the UK & Ireland market at ABB Energy Industries, based in Dublin, Ireland. With over 12 years of experience at ABB, Diogo has worked in South Africa and Brazil before joining ABB Northern Europe in 2021. Previously, he served as the Business Development Manager for Oil & Gas in Sub-Saharan countries at ABB South Africa. Diogo's background in Electrical and Automation has led him to hold various business development roles in Oil and Gas and Process Industries. He has also worked at Siemens Brazil and Unicontrol. Diogo holds an MBA from the University of La Verne, California, United States, and a degree in Electronic Engineering from Mackenzie University, Brazil.

In the UK & Ireland, he oversees ABB's Offshore Wind portfolio, specifically focusing on the design of Electrical Substations (Onshore / Offshore), Automation/SCADA systems, Telecommunications, Subsea Substations, Power from Shore, and FEED Studies.

Henning is an accomplished professional with extensive experience in the field of subsea power technology. Currently, he serves as the Section Manager for Subsea Technology.

Henning has played a central role as a Principal R&D Engineer in the development and qualification of ABBs Subsea Power products for over 10 years. He has led and collaborated on research and development projects that aimed to enhance the efficiency, reliability, quality and to push the boundaries of subsea technology.

Henning holds a master’s degree in electronic engineering from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTNU).

Dhrubaa Mitra is the Electrical Engineering Manager for the Energy Industries division in the UK, based in St. Neots, UK. She holds an M.Eng is Electrical Engineering & Electronics and has been working at ABB for over 11 years.

She is currently responsible for a team of electrical engineers delivering greenfield and brownfield field projects including commissioning and operational service to the customers in the energy industries sector, covering renewables, oil & gas and power generation plants.

Prior to her current role, she has worked at ABB in various roles including Service Engineer for the ABB automation system for oil & gas customers in the UKCS and Electrical Engineer carrying our power system studies
