The Beginning of a New Era

ABB is acting on its mission to responsibly accelerate the  energy transition by partnering with Finnish engineering company Coolbrook. Our partnership will transform the, chemicals, cement and other asset-heavy industries through a joint technology offering that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, waste generation and energy consumption in industrial processes.
Coolbrook’s revolutionary technology uses electrification powered by clean energy to drastically cut the CO2 emissions in steam cracking, one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industrial processes. ABB’s partnership with Coolbrook will accelerate the commercialization of this transformative technology at scale.

Breakthrough Improvements in Olefins Production

The ABB and Coolbrook Partnership will electrify steam crackers with the potential to:

Reduce up to 300 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions

Eliminate 100% of CO2 emissions created during steam cracking (world’s only technology that does this)

Reduce energy consumption by 30%

Increase yield by 20%

Better Together

In January 2022, ABB and Coolbrook signed a Memorandum of Understanding to commercialize and accelerate the adoption of Coolbrook’s Roto Dynamic Reactor technology. The agreement unites the two companies’ expertise and creates a combined offering of Coolbrook’s novel electrically driven, Roto Dynamic Reactor technology and ABB’s integrated, pre-engineered energy solutions.

The partnership will enable creation of joint solutions by combining ABB’s process automation, motion and electrical technologies with Coolbrook’s RDR technologies. This partnership is part of a broader ecosystem that the two companies are establishing, each doing its part to drive global, industrial sustainability.

“Coolbrook has set a target to build a committed and comprehensive ecosystem around its revolutionary RDR technology to commercialize it as soon as possible. ABB will become a key partner in that ecosystem with the aim of accelerating the process substantially. Our RDR technology and ABB’s technology perfectly complement each other. Together, we will offer a first of its kind electric, carbon-free solution for one of the biggest industrial processes in the world.”

The Solution

Olefins, such as ethylene and propylene, are the key raw materials used in the chemical industry, primarily for polymer production. The leading technology for olefin production is steam cracking by high-temperature pyrolysis (thermal decomposition) of primarily hydrocarbon feedstock, diluted with steam inside a cracking furnace.

Greener Industrial Processes. Delivered.

A strategic partnership for greenhouse gas reduction and energy savings.

The technology is suitable for greenfield and brownfield projects alike. Standardized, modular offerings
developed in pre-engineered packages drive down capital costs and easily integrate
into existing plant designs.
