Overview: As part of its ongoing commitment to operational excellence and sustainability, LKAB is undertaking an upgrade of its conveyor system at the company’s iron ore mine in Sweden. This initiative involves replacing conventional conveyor drives on a more than 20-year-old system with ABB gearless conveyor drives, marking a shift toward more efficient and reliable material handling as well as increased production. This presentation focuses on the challenges and strategies involved in designing and implementing two 1,600 kW GCDs equipped with permanent magnet motors, which will replace an aging 2,800 kW wound rotor induction motor and gearbox system.
