ABB partners with Italian switchgear designer to power major water purification plan in Northern Italy

ABB is providing technology for the expansion of a cooperative water purification plant in Northern Italy, a project that is fundamental for the protection of water quality in the rivers and lakes of one of the most industrialized areas of the Po Valley. The purification plant will treat wastewater from 26 municipalities across two provinces, servicing the needs of more than 90,000 inhabitants.

Modernizing City of Nashville’s water infrastructure, driving water availability for its growing population

McLean Technology Group (MTG) has employed ABB to deliver automation, electrification, and instrumentation solutions at Nashville’s Central Wastewater Treatment facility, managed by Metro Water Services (MWS), as it looks to address the needs of a population, expected to increase by 50 percent by 2045.
Serving over 250,000 customers, MWS currently treats approximately 186 million gallons of water per day at its wastewater treatment facilities.

The project will see the implementation of ABB Ability’s 800xA control system at a new headworks, a screening and grit removal facility being built as part of the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant Optimization Project. The Central facility, once optimized, will have a maximum hydraulic capacity of 440 million gallons per day and will utilize ultraviolet light to disinfect the treated wastewater, incorporating heavy duty and fine screens to reduce clogging. Works will also include improvements to conveyance piping, upgrades to the aeration system, and additional capture and treatment of odor sources.

Measuring Melbourne water fluoride levels

In Melbourne, Australia, as in many other parts of the world, fluoride is added to public water supplies to improve dental health. Melbourne Water is responsible for ensuring fluoride levels are correct in the more than 400 billion liters of water it supplies annually to customers. If fluoride levels are too high, the results can harm the population’s health so precision analyzers are required to ensure fluoridation levels are carefully monitored and controlled.

Ensuring clean water for Istanbul

Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration, ISKI, is responsible for supplying clean water to and treating wastewater for, many of the capital city’s residents. The Atakoy Wastewater Advanced Biological Treatment Plant was extended to a capacity of 240,000m3 per day, the equivalent to handling the water needs of 1.1 million people, expanding and upgrading Turkey’s overall wastewater treatment capability. The project presented an opportunity for ISKI to explore new ways to monitor the flow of wastewater within the new treatment facility. The combination of ABB’s WaterMaster with Verimaster software provided the right digital solution to ensure that they maintain their desired performance levels, thereby minimizing process downtime and saving money.

Tackling blockages in wastewater

Blockages in wastewater pipes cause unnecessary maintenance. Blockages increase costs for the community. In order to reduce the occurrence of pump blockages in South-East Queensland in Australia, ABB’s channel partner supplied low voltage water-dedicated drives to tackle this problem. The ABB ACQ580 drive has pump clean functionality built inside the drive. It does a series of rapid forward and backward movement of the impeller in the pump, that helps loosen the blockages. This will increase the resilience of the pumping system in use.
