Medium voltage outdoor instrument transformers

Protecting an evolving outdoor grid

Medium voltage outdoor instrument transformers are used for insulation of medium voltage components and to transform voltage or current to standardized measurable values.

ABB’s medium voltage outdoor instrument transformers are cast in hydrophobic cycloaliphatic epoxy resin (HCEP). The HCEP material offers superior arc track, ozone, and ultraviolet-resistive properties while maintaining physical strength. The hydrophobic surface properties of HCEP ensure highly reliable performance in harsh, wet, or humid environments to fully withstand outdoor conditions.

ABB’s medium voltage outdoor instrument transformers (current and voltage), for IEC and other standards, are ideal for various outdoor applications such as medium voltage substations, circuit breaker and switch disconnector installations, pole-mounted metering units and overhead line installations, railway substations and distribution transformers. As part of our portfolio, ABB offers current and voltage outdoor instrument transformers:

  • Outdoor current transformers, up to 52 kV for metering and protection purposes
  • Outdoor voltage transformers, up to 40,5 kV for metering, protection and external power supplies

Built to withstand the rigors of the most demanding environments, ABB medium voltage outdoor instrument transformers are available for original equipment manufacturers (OEM),  Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) partners as well as end-users to incorporate in their own new installations or retrofit and upgrade projects

ABB supports customers and partners in staying ahead of increasing electrification needs, technology advancements, and regulatory changes, providing the power to adapt to a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
