Configuring your data sources

Your goal: valuable process data seamlessly retrieved from fragmented control systems, interfaced with other data sources, ready to communicate towards the Cloud and the shop floor in real time.

Our solution: Process Data Management, part of ABB Ability™ Manufacturing Execution System for pulp and paper

ABB has the right combination of domain-specific expertise and knowledge of both IT and OT infrastructure to ensure that your data management approach is closely aligned to your business strategy.

We know how to properly label, model and structure data specific to the pulp and paper operations, how to store, compute and stream high volumes of data securely and cost effectively.

Bringing structure and standardization to data, which may have been collected (and likely unused) for decades, is a vital step towards creating a fully integrated digital infrastructure that allows asset and operational data to be accessed, visualized and analyzed for improved performance.  ABB helps mills:

  • Enable seamless retrieval of decades of historical data from pulp and paper control systems and access to other data sources - following harmonized naming conventions and meta data.
  • Form a scalable connectivity solution for high volume storage of any type of production data - organized hierarchically based on standardized data models and structures shared across all levels.
  • Control and secure data streaming and pulling between levels, to and from the Cloud - available in real time, in both directions and at optimized cost

Stora Enso’s Imatra Mills

Paper mills obtain the greatest benefit by applying integrated data management approach simultaneously  – as Stora Enso did across 11 production lines. This increased cost efficiency and gave users enhanced access to the process data they most needed.

First it was decided to build a model system, or Template, and create a common operational method - as a standard solution for all mills. It included all changes and interfaces common for all mills.

“Costs are measured, and when repeating cost measurements of the same variable it ensures the validity of the data. With respect to chemicals, it is also easy to get clear summaries of the relevant situation. These were some of these special features that we particularly wanted to have in our new production management solution. Now we have much more information to support our decisions. A single report from the new system equals several reports from the old systems”
