Evolve your DCS for the future

OMS3

Towards Autonomous Operations

You may be running an outdated control system that still performs adequately. Sound familiar? However, rapid technological advancements can render these systems obsolete quickly. Often, their lifecycle is already classified as Limited or Obsolete. This limits system efficiency, makes spare parts unavailable, and reduces the availability of expert knowledge. Such factors present a significant risk to your production uptime.

“Unplanned shutdown can cost an industrial plant upwards of 200.000 USD per hour*. Given that the average shutdown event lasts four hours, a run-to-fail maintenance strategy poses a significant risk to your business goals”

How we can help you

ABB offers comprehensive solutions to modernize these systems. Customers can choose from various migration options tailored to their specific requirements and budget. This is our ‘Fit Principle.’ Although the technical approach differs for each control system, the objectives of each option are always achieved. This way, customers can gradually evolve their DCS system step by step.

Fit for Now

With Fit for Now, the top layer is replaced. This ensures that client PCs and servers meet the latest requirements and run the best-supported version of the Windows platform. This provides (cyber) protection because the latest updates can be installed. An outdated platform means it is no longer supported by software vendors.

Thanks to the Fit for Now principle, the system is protected again at a low cost, while retaining the current software and controller hardware. ABB ensures that a new HMI integrates seamlessly with the existing software.

Fit for Years

Even after the top layer has been migrated, there is still a risk that OT hardware may fail. Spare parts for heritage systems are no longer available, which can lead to extended shutdowns. Fit for Years ensures that the most critical OT components are replaced with parts that are in the Active Lifecycle, thereby extending the system’s lifecycle.

With Fit for Years, ABB replaces these components while retaining the current controllers and software. This improves plant availability, but the risk of controller failure remains. Additionally, expertise in the software technologies will continue to decline over the coming years. Fit for Years is therefore the next step towards Fit for Life.
