EN ISO 14119 - the only harmonized standard for interlocking devices associated with guards

Since May 2015, EN ISO 14119 is the only harmonized standard for interlocking devices associated with guards. EN 1088 cannot be used anymore.

Eden is a non-contact safety sensor for interlocked doors and safe position sensing. The safety sensor is used to assure that a machine stops when a door or hatch is opened. It can also be used to monitor if a robot is in a fixed position when someone enters the working area of the robot. By using Eden it is easy to meet the requirements in EN ISO 14119.

1. Test frequency (EN ISO 14119)

To reach PL e, one of the requirements is that the interlocking devices should be tested at least every month and to reach PL d they should be tested every year.
Eden is tested automatically by its electronics several times a second, and makes it easy to reach PL e.

2. Necessary number of devices to reach PL e (EN ISO 14119 - § 8.2)

To reach PL e, 2 key switches per door are required (a broken actuator can normally not be excluded as a fault), or only one Eden per door.

3. Masking of faults in series connection of interlocking devices (ISO/TR 24119)

Because of the risk of fault masking, it is very difficult to reach PL e with key switches connected in series.

With a key switch, reachable PL depends on the number of switches in series and their frequency of use.

With Eden, PL e is always reachable with up to 30 Eden in series.

When the emergency-stop button is pushed, both its contacts are opened and the machine stops. When the E-stop is released, a safety relay will check that both contacts are opened before allowing the start of the machine, e.g. in order to detect a possible short-circuit.

EN ISO 14119:2013 refers to ISO/TR 24119 for information on the masking of faults in series connection of interlocking devices.

When several interlocking devices are connected in series, e.g. a cell with two doors and one key switch per door, a short circuit on one contact will not be detected by the safety relay if another door is simultaneously opened and closed. The fault will be masked, i.e. not seen.

So the more devices that are connected in series and the more often they are activated, the higher the risk of masking a fault, therefore the lower the Diagnostic Coverage (DC - EN ISO 13849). An example is maintenance, when it is quite usual that operators open all the doors simultaneously: the DC can be none which means a maximum reachable PL of PL c.

4. Minimize defeat possibilites (when the motivation to defeat cannot be totally eliminated)

A high level coded proximity switch like Eden is much easier to install than a low or medium level coded key switch or magnetic switch.

Annex H of the standard provides guidance to evaluate and/or eliminate the motivation to defeat interlocking devices, for example the motivation to bypass them or prevent their intended function in any way. If this motivation to defeat cannot be totally eliminated, the following measures are required:

Interlocking and locking - what is the difference?

An interlocking device is usually mounted on a movable guard, e.g. on a door. Usually a stop command is given when the guard is opened and the hazardous movements are prevented during this time. An interlocking device does not need to have a locking function.

Locking devices such as Magne, Mkey and Knox are usually used when the door may only be opened at a specific time, e.g. at the end of the welding operation or when the dangerous movement has stopped.

Locking and interlocking are two different functions. While interlocking is a safety function, locking doesn’t have to be a safety function e.g. if the purpose is to protect the process and not the persons.

Eden is an interlocking device without locking function.

Safety lock or process lock – what is the difference?

All locks of the ABB Jokab Safety range can be used as process locks but only Knox and the spring lock models of MKey can be used as safety locks. Why?

A process lock protects the process. An example of application would be a lock on a door giving access to a welding machine. The door should not be unlocked before the end of the welding cycle. Should the door be unlocked before the end of the cycle (as a consequence of a fault in the installation like a loss of power or a short-circuit) the process would stop. It might take a long time to restart the process, but no person would have come close to the danger or get injured.

A safety lock protects people. An example of application would be a lock on a door giving access to a circular saw or another dangerous machine with a long stop time. The door should never be unlocked before the dangerous movement has stopped, not even as a consequence of a fault in the installation like a loss of power or a short-circuit. Should the door be unlocked before the machine has stopped, a person could get close to the dangerous movement and get injured.

Since a loss of power should not unlock a safety lock, only locks that require power for unlocking (e.g. +24 VDC) can be used as safety locks.
