ABB strengthens power grid reliability in east China

1,000 kilovolt ultrahigh-voltage alternating current (UHVAC) transformer helps to improve grid stability and efficiency

Due to rapid economic development, the North and East regions of China are embarking on large scale transmission projects to bring more reliable power to citizens and industry centers to meet increasing demand for electricity. The Shandong – Hebei UHVAC project, undertaken by State Grid Corporation of China, will connect two power transmission systems in East China’s Shandong province and North China’s Hebei province, to enhance power security and improve grid stability.

The project, which is expected to be in operation by the end of 2019, aims to integrate more clean energy into the systems, in a move to support China’s vision of low-carbon economic growth. ABB will design and supply 1,000 kilovolt UHVAC transformers, amongst the most powerful in the world, and other products for the Heze station of this project.

“We are proud to support China’s ongoing infrastructure development with our advanced transformer technology, helping to strengthen the power grid in the country,” said Laurent Favre, head of ABB’s transformers business, a part of the company’s Power Grids division. “Our power transformers will help to reliably and efficiently transport increasing amounts of clean, renewable power over long distances and bring electricity to millions of consumers.”

The higher voltage level puts stringent demands on the thermal and mechanical performance of the transformers and specific focus was required in the design, production and testing process in order to verify the highest levels of performance, including insulation functionality and the ability to withstand short-circuit stresses. These measures will ensure the highest safety standards and increased energy efficiency while contributing to grid stability and power reliability.

In addition to the 1,000 kV UHVAC transformers, ABB has also provided gas-insulated switchgears (GIS), live tank breakers (LTB) and capacitors to this project. GIS and LTB technologies are deployed to protect electrical equipment and ensure the reliability of electricity supply. Capacitors are critical components to improve power factor, lower transmission loss, improve grid transmission capacity and filter harmonics and improve the power quality of the network.

As the world’s largest transformer manufacturer and service provider, ABB has an unparalleled global installed base and a vast portfolio of power, distribution and special application transformers and is the partner of choice for enabling a stronger, smarter and greener grid.
