The consortium of 11 partners behind the EU-funded FLAGSHIPS project believe hydrogen-powered vessels are commercially viable and hope the project will prove the benefits. The aim is to design, build, and deploy two commercially operated, inland-waterway vessels equipped with hydrogen fuel cells as demonstration cases.
One of the vessels, named Zulu 06, is a self-propelled barge that will operate on the River Seine in the center of Paris, France. This article discusses the vessel and its fuel-cell power train designed for zero-emission operations.
