Trivia for drive nerds: The easter egg that indicates frame size

This Fun Fact Friday is for the drives nerds who like random product facts, perhaps for job site/workplace trivia – just to prove you know more random facts than the person next to you.

Let's unravel HVACR complexities with Tim R. Skell!

Did you know you can tell the frame size of an HVACR ACH580 drive by looking at the number of bars molded into the front cover? The pic below shows two bars (see red arrows); thus, it is a Frame 2 size drive.

For those unfamiliar with frame sizes, this Fun Fact Friday explains what a frame size means in variable speed drives lingo. Drives of different power (kW or HP) sizes often have the same dimensions.

For example, on the ABB 400 VAC ACH580, units ranging from  0.75 to 5.5 kW are all the same size. Then, the 7.5 and 11 kW also share the same dimensions. Moving up, 15, 18.5, and 22 kW are the same size as well. This means the 0.75-5.5 kW range corresponds to Frame Size 1, the 7.5-11 kW Frame Size 2, and the 15-22 kW to Frame Size 3.

The concept of frame sizes is not unique to ABB or VSDs; it applies to other manufacturers and many other product types, such as breakers, contactors, or motors.
