China’s largest distributor of industrial electrical components and power distribution technologies has selected ABB to deliver digital upgrades to its new 20,000 sq.m. headquarters and factory. Zhongyeda Electric Company in Shantou, Guangdong, is using the ABB AbilityTM Electrical Distribution Control System (EDCS) to reduce its energy and maintenance costs.
Zhongyeda Electric Company distributes major international brands, primarily serving customers in the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, China’s industrial and high technology core. Following expansion work at its headquarters, the company wanted to digitize power distribution at the site.
Zhongyeda specified a cost-effective digital distribution system and required minimum downtime during its rollout. ABB recognized the advantages of the ABB Ability EDCS.
James Zhao, lead business manager of ABB’s Electrification business in China, said: “This project shows why ABB is the global industry leader in digital power technologies for industry. Zhongyeda Electric is one of China’s biggest names in industrial power products. For such a respected business to choose ABB to deliver the digital upgrades to its facility demonstrates the trust and performance that ABB solutions offer. The easy retrofitting options and the effectiveness of the ABB Ability EDCS make it the logical choice for industrial facilities looking to optimize their energy usage.”
Zhongyeda Electric General Manager Jason Wu said: “Zhongyeda wanted digital functionality to help lower our operational and maintenance costs. ABB’s solution provided more capabilities for less cost and with a much shorter transformation time. Their rapid digital upgrade has given our operations improved energy efficiency analysis and asset health management and has made our facility more intelligent. As a professional electric automation service provider, we hope that more new and retrofit projects will use the ABB Ability EDCS system through this upgrading application.”
The ABB Ability Electrical Distribution Control System uses a cloud platform to monitor, optimize and control power distribution at industrial facilities and commercial sites. EDCS is able to identify opportunities to shave peak loads, reducing energy costs. The system also monitors the real usage of electrical assets and the performance of switchgear components to enable intelligent predictive maintenance strategies.
The ABB Ekip UP digital unit was key to the upgrade work’s effectiveness. The retrofit device’s ability to monitor the different distribution equipment brands previously installed in the brownfield facility’s distribution room minimized hardware changes and downtime. In a greenfield distribution room, with ABB’s Emax 2 air circuit breakers ABB made it simple to meet all Zhongyeda Electric’s digitalization and performance requirements. By combining the different solutions, the facility achieved up to zero disruption for operations and sustainability impact.
To satisfy the overall facility digitalization, the solution also utilizes the Ekip E-Hub for collecting and transmitting digital data and the IM302 intelligent power parameter monitoring and control device. As part of the project, ABB’s customer support team provided digital training for Zhongyeda executives and staff.
