ABB’s Evago® fills a gap for architectural emergency lighting

Although building and infrastructure design has created architectural landmarks for decades, emergency lighting has lagged behind, providing a necessary but clashing element – until recently.

ABB’s international team recently designed a new frameless emergency lighting solution that offers a sleek, streamlined profile in harmony with interior spaces. The Emergency Lighting team in Australia set to work, adapting the international design to meet Australian and New Zealand standards, and introduce a safety solution fit for architectural spaces – Evago.

Where local standards meet global design

“Australia and New Zealand boast some of the most striking architectural designs globally and yet it was clear that emergency lighting designs were holding back a superior finish to these destinations,” said Stephen Charlton, Global Product Manager (Asia) Emergency Lighting.

“One of our sister companies in the Netherlands developed a frameless solution and we immediately saw the benefit of introducing that to our market.”

The resulting Evago range features a frameless design that is clearly visible in high and low ambient light environments, with viewing distances up to 24 metres. Its slimline design enables a uniform, bright distribution of light, upholding the highest standards of safety.

The innovative emergency lighting solution provides a level of design flexibility not previously available in Australia and New Zealand – as part of the Stanilite® Platinum range. It strikes the ideal balance between high-grade safety visibility and minimalist aesthetics. All Evago products comply with the latest Australian and New Zealand standards, ensuring the utmost in reliability.

Integrating the latest in monitoring solutions

The Evago range has provided Nexus® monitoring compatibility since it was first introduced to the market. Off the back of ABB’s launch of the new Nexus RF Infinity platform, existing Evago clients now also benefit from backwards compatibility, extending their upgrade investments.

“A major priority for our Australian research and development (R&D) team was modifying the international design to ensure compatibility with our Nexus RF monitoring system,” said Stephen. “Architectural excellence and state-of-the-art technology commonly go hand-in-hand. With Evago, those two advantages are available through the one solution.”

Nexus RF Infinity features digital enhancements such as seamless mobile phone commissioning, report distribution from mobile devices, integration with building management systems and enhanced IT security.

As building designs increasingly offer layout flexibility to suit changing business requirements, one of the most exciting developments of Nexus RF Infinity is its ability to automatically and dynamically form new communication paths through dynamic mesh networking technology – all using existing hardware.

For current and future Evago clients, this compatibility with Nexus RF Infinity creates a measurable advantage in ongoing monitoring. It future-proofs infrastructure for optimal performance.

Technology-enabled hardware to meet client needs

ABB once again leveraged its more than 45 years of engineering history to deliver the Evago range. Each product features LED technology, with more than 100,000 hours of lamp life, low power consumption and lower operations and maintenance costs than alternatives. Advanced lithium iron phosphate batteries also deliver long-lasting, low-maintenance value, complete with advanced pulse-time battery charging.

Installers and facilities managers benefit from efficient, simple installation and maintenance including the option of using first-fix control gear that streamlines installation, improves safety with a lighter weight to reduce its load, and simplifies repairs via its slide-in/slide-out function.

The combination of technology and smart engineering enables clients to realise cost savings well beyond their initial investment.

In addition to Nexus monitoring compatibility, the range features standard and wireless technology; ceiling (single and double-sided), wall-mount and new surface-mount configurations; sleek 0.5m and 1m rod and wire suspension accessories; and specialist theatre mask products – options that span a diverse range of building and infrastructure contexts.

When combined with its architecturally pleasing, frameless design, Evago products are in a class of their own for emergency lighting, backed by a 5-year warranty.
