Intelligent and interconnected automation and electrical technologies are enabling a cleaner, greener and leaner energy future

As process industries grow and evolve in the Industry 4.0 age, ABB is developing cutting-edge solutions together with customers by combining its strengths in automation and electrification to enhance productivity, boost reliability, optimize energy usage and lower costs for mining, pulp and paper, metals and hybrid industries

Utilizing ABB Ability™ System 800xA as the foundation, Process Industries is integrating power distribution systems and process electrification with process automation, ABB Smart Power controls, leveraging decades-long expertise in automation and electrification.

“Our capability to design and deliver a reliable system makes Process Industries an ideal partner during an investment feasibility phase,” said Mikael Ingo, Local Division Manager for Finland, Process Industries, ABB.

“In a period of fast technology development, where digitalization leads to more integration of electrification and automation, partnerships between customers and Process Industries is more relevant than ever before. Combined expertise provides perfect synergies, which makes it possible to help customers to evolve and flourish in the fourth industrial revolution.”

Building facilities of the future

ABB has successfully delivered integrated automation and electrification systems to several process industries companies, including Swedish mining company Boliden, battery producer Northvolt as well as for the HYBRIT (Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology) pilot, which is building the world’s first fossil-free steel plant in Luleå, Sweden.

Paving the way for future mining

ABB’s electrical infrastructure, which includes a trolley assist system, powers mine trucks at Aitik, an open-pit copper mine owned and operated by Boliden. A digital substation, including a 4.8MW rectifier, connected to the ABB AbilityTM System 800xA control system, is currently running at the Swedish mine.

Early involvement in this project gave us a better understanding of Boliden’s requirements, enabling us to smoothly carry out design, delivery and commissioning. Our electrical and automation solutions help the customer to optimize energy consumption and increase uptime at Aitik,” said Gunnar Hammarström, Global Product Manager Trolley Electrification Systems, Process Industries, ABB.

Power supply for Europe’s largest battery factory

An all-in-one solution based on ABB AbilityTM System 800xA and Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) software combining robotics, machine and factory automation and electrification is installed for Northvolt, one of Europe’s largest battery manufacturers.

“An ABB power distribution system at Northvolt ensures a steady, reliable electricity supply. The solution uses compact gas insulated switchgear (GIS), which optimizes power while lowering maintenance, ventilation and heating requirements. A power management system (PMS) controls and monitors the system remotely,” remarks Andreas Ganz, Global Product Line Manager, Smart Manufacturing, Process Industries, ABB

Maximized energy efficiency at future fossil-free steel pilot

ABB is providing an integrated electrification and automation for the HYBRIT pilot plant in Luleå, northern Sweden, with its main energy source coming from fossil-free electricity. Steel company SSAB, mining company LKAB and energy firm Vattenfall are using hydrogen instead of coal for this joint venture project

Use of the newest version of ABB Ability™ System 800xA with Select I/O control systems results in flexibility and scalability for the steel plant. “We are installing dry-insulated Resibloc transformers to optimize energy efficiency. ABB’s transformers boost safety and performance together with low-voltage Universal Motor Controller (UMC) switchgears and frequency converters,” said Erich Eberle, Industry Lead for Metals, North Europe, Process Industries, ABB.
