ABB launches Green Electrification 2035 program to achieve carbon neutrality target

In cooperation with Business Finland, ABB has launched a world-class R&D program to develop platforms for optimal electricity generation and electricity use in a carbon-neutral society. Business Finland has granted EUR 20 million in funding for the program in the challenge competition for leading companies.

The aim of ABB’s five-year Green Electrification 2035 program is to develop new integrated technology platforms for optimal electricity generation and use. The platforms combine modern 5G communication technology, data management, new electrical engineering solutions and power grid technology. In the future, an increasing number of physical devices will be replaced by digital solutions that communicate with each other in a cyber-secure way. The resulting system can react quickly to changed conditions, while minimizing energy loss and malfunctions.

“At ABB, we energize the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive and sustainable future. To achieve Finland’s 2035 climate target, the use of carbon-neutral electrification and energy efficiency must be significantly increased in society. In addition, electricity must replace other forms of energy. Electricity systems are becoming increasingly important to the functioning of society, which increases the reliability requirements of the systems,” says Pekka Tiitinen, CEO of ABB Oy.

The program supports the goal of increasing Finland’s research and development activities to four percent of GDP by 2030, and it is estimated that participation in the program will contribute to achieving this aim. ABB has a strong foothold in Finland, and the Green Electrification 2035 program is a natural continuation of ABB’s research and development work and business operations in Finland, which have now continued for more than 130 years.

Comprehensive sustainable and competitive solutions with the innovation ecosystem

Comprehensive sustainable and competitive solutions with the innovation ecosystem Green Electrification 2035 launches a new innovation ecosystem, with which ABB, as the leader of the program, wants to encourage the companies involved to develop their solutions based on the program’s technology platforms. The program will strengthen cooperation with Finnish companies, research institutes and universities. Green Electrification 2035 program members can also jointly apply for funding from Business Finland or the European Union.

“We’re delighted with the partnership with Business Finland through the Green Electrification 2035 program. We’re also looking forward to working with the innovation ecosystem to create new technologies and platform concepts,” says Simo Säynevirta, who is the director coordinating ABB Oy’s program.

The program will deliver in cooperation with its ecosystem partners controllable and safe overall solutions that optimize system-level energy efficiency and reliability. These solutions are scalable, meet the growing demand for energy efficiency, and encourage platform ecosystem participants to become more competitive and grow internationally.

At the beginning of 2020, Business Finland organized a competition to challenge leading companies to solve significant future challenges and increase their research, development and innovation investments in Finland. Business Finland committed to financing the winning projects of the challenge competition with a total of EUR 60 million. Three projects, proposed by four companies, were selected as the first winners of the competition in the summer of 2020. ABB’s program is one of three new leading company projects that Business Finland decided to finance after receiving an additional mandate of EUR 60 million in the amending budget to continue the leading company competition.
