ABB’s fast charger powers Japan’s first EV charging pilot on public roads

The City of Yokohama and consortium, e-Mobility Power (eMP), are examining the value, usefulness and challenges associated with public electric vehicle charging with a first-time pilot project on a public road in Aoba Ward, Yokohama, Japan.

ABB's Terra 184 DC fast charger, designed for quick, convenient charging of all electric vehicle models, has been selected as part of this pilot, which will power cars travelling along what would normally be a no-parking zone. The 184 Terra charger can provide a full charge to two vehicles simultaneously.

eMP is a joint venture between seven companies – Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO), Chubu Electric Power, Toyota Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and the Development Bank of Japan Inc – all with the same goal to promote the adoption of EVs.

This pilot is a significant step towards realizing Yokohama’s decarbonization target of zero carbon by 2050. eMP and the City of Yokohama have signed a "Collaboration Agreement to Promote EV Adoption in Yokohama", and will actively work to create an environment that facilitates the use of EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs in the city, and to create new mechanisms that contribute to the expansion of the charging infrastructure.

“We are delighted to support this first-of-its-kind project in Japan. ABB’s technologies not only support this ground-breaking project but will also contribute to the expansion of charging facilities to promote the electrification of vehicles, which is one of the pillars of Japan's strategy to address the urgent need to reduce environmental impact.” said Masayasu Ishikawa, head of ABB Japan’s Electrification business.

The Terra 184 fast charger installed for the pilot is one of more than 250 selected by eMP in 2020. The Terra 184 fast charger is the latest addition to ABB’s best-selling Terra family and supports CHAdeMO charging standards. Designed for convenient charging of all electric vehicles, including future models with high voltage battery systems, the Terra charger’s compact size makes it perfect for urban use. With highly customizable features such as cable management systems, the Terra 184 delivers maximum charging convenience for a broad range of EV users.
