Green Móvil expands e-mobility in Colombia with advanced digital electrical infrastructure

Bogotá, the capital and most populous city of Colombia with its over 7 million inhabitants, is one of the highest major cities in the world at 2640 meters above sea level. The city also stands out thanks to its public transport company, Green Móvil, which has made the switch to 100 percent electric buses, positioning them as having the largest electric fleet in Latin America.

ABB recently implemented a project to provide digital electrical infrastructure for Green Móvil’s electrical bus charging stations. Within the scope of the Digital Electrical Infrastructure-Feed Bus Depot project, new electrical infrastructure will be installed in charging stations for more than 400 of the company’s electric buses. Further, to enhance their operational efficiency and provide asset control, a secure operations data management platform will provide Green Móvil with real time data to support faster and better decision making.

To deliver a robust and smart solution to meet Green Móvil’s requirements of medium-voltage infrastructure for 20 MVA (Mega Volt Ampere) power, ABB and electrical contractor MGM joined forces and offered a solution with zenon SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system and seven SafePlus Digital medium-voltage switchgear with the all-in-one advanced protection relay Relion® REX640.

“With this solution, Green Móvil will gain real-time monitoring and will be able to centralize operations. Further, they will also have the REX640 HMI in the switchgear panels for easier management in the stations. This is an innovative solution to further support the growing E-mobility segment”, said Sebastián Gonzáles, New Business Manager, at MGM.

“The REX640 has a seven-inch color touchscreen that allows better interaction between the operator and the equipment. You get better visualization of measurements, events and signals” said Edwin Usaquen, Product Marketing Specialist for ABB Electrification in Colombia.

“Our partnership with MGM always allows us to meet new challenges and provide the solution that meets the end user’s needs. We always think about the larger implications - we think about what this will mean for the city, the country and the construction of an increasingly sustainable society” said Cintya Hernández, Channel Specialist for ABB Electrification in Colombia.

Green Móvil targets to take the new infrastructure into use step-by-step and began in December 2021.
