- A lifetime of achievement in creative design to be recognised by headline partner ABB at the 15th World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Lisbon
- One of the industry’s true pioneers, Sir Peter Cook will be launching his new book, in association with ABB, at WAF
- Visitors to enjoy a keynote speech and book signing with the British architecture scholar during the festival
As the World Architecture Festival (WAF) makes its return as an in-person event, the opportunity to recognise and celebrate one of architecture’s most creative and inspiring figures will be available to attendees as Sir Peter Cook launches his new book at the event, in association with ABB. The book launch will form a major part of the 15th WAF, the first time attendees will have gathered together in person at the annual event since 2019. As part of the celebration of Cook’s work, the event will also feature a new bespoke Judges and Speakers Lounge, designed by Sir Peter and commissioned by ABB.
The British architecture scholar will be showcasing a lifetime of creativity in theory and architectural design through a keynote lecture at lunch on the first day, Wednesday 30th November, followed by the formal launch of his new book, ‘Speculations’, the same afternoon. The book collects drawings and sketches from throughout Sir Peter Cook’s career, spanning eight decades, from the 1950s to the present. On Sir Peter’s request, Katrin Förster, Global Key Account Manager at ABB, and recently appointed member of the board of trustees to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), will introduce the lecture.
In looking ahead to the event, Sir Peter Cook said: “I am immensely looking forward to seeing everyone again at WAF after the pandemic enforced absence and to launching a new collection of my work. I hope readers gather as much joy from the work in Speculations as I got in its initial creation, and in the editing of it. I am grateful to ABB for their support in its publication and for asking me to design the judges and speakers lounge at this most essential of events for architects and the practice of architectural design. To be able to congregate and celebrate with peers and colleagues from the world over once again will be a delight.”
Katrin Förster, who also heads ABB’s video series ‘Frozen Music’ that explores outstanding modern architecture projects and the architects behind them, said: “This is our sixth year of formal partnership with WAF and we are very honoured to be hosting Sir Peter Cook’s book launch at the festival. He is a unique visionary who inspires us to look beyond our limits, pointing the way to what can be achieved when we apply a creative approach to challenges we face. Speculations is a vividly inspirational collection of Sir’s Peter’s lifetime of work.”
In addition to his lecture, Sir Peter Cook will be signing copies of ‘Speculations’ near the main stage on Wednesday lunchtime and in the evening at the ABB reception. ABB will also showcase, on the festival’s Town Square, some of its award-winning smart building technology that supports safe and sustainable living. More on how smart building technology enhances comfort, reliability and energy efficiency can also be seen in the latest episode of ABB’s architectural video series Frozen Music, presenting Villa Petra, also located in Portugal.
- The founder member of the visionary collective, Archigram, Professor Sir Peter Cook’s distinctive drawings have captivated and inspired generations of designers. Freed from stylistic or functional conventions, his graphic speculations have redefined the language of architectural communication. Speculations spans Cook’s entire career, presenting some 160 drawings that range from student projects in the 1950s, through Archigram, to new work completed shortly before going to press.
