PCS100 SFC key applications

ABB's PCS100 Static Frequency Converter has a wide variety of applications, from enabling connection to cheaper utility power and reducing reliance on captive power plants, to harnessing the by-products of those energy storage systems to provide an additional energy source. The PCS100 SFC also enables factories around the world to use equipment designed for use with a different grid frequency.

PCS100 SFCs can be tailored to support major transportation projects. For example a PCS100 SFC supported a textile company’s relocation from Italy to Mexico by enabling the facility's existing equipment, which had previously operated on Europe's 50 Hz power supply, to connect to Mexico’s 60 Hz grid.

PCS100 SFCs have been installed in facilities upgrading their plant to run on utility power, abandoning expensive and inefficient diesel generators. The facility's equipment was manufactured in a region using a different grid frequency and therefore would operate at 120 percent speed causing motors to burn out. the PCS100 SFC bridged the connection between the utility and the load, altering the supply frequency to match that of the load, allowing the plant to run on cheaper, cleaner and more reliable utility voltage.

PCS100 SFC's have been implemented to regulate utility load for residential cogeneration (also called combined heating and power) systems. Incoming utility is monitored and regulated such that, regardless of building load, the incoming supply is maintained at a constant 30 kW. Any additional load is offset or absorbed by the cogeneration installation.

ABB supplied a PCS100 SFC during the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup and the America’s Cup. ABB has supplied many PCS100 SFCs for shore-to-ship (S2S) applications, mostly in the range of 800–2000 kVA, however we have supplied up to 8 MVA. Multiple units are often installed allowing them to be paralleled or used individually.
