Cylinder gases for cutting and welding – at the core of industrial gases operations

The main gases used for cutting and welding industrial applications are oxygen, acetylene, argon, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Carbon monoxide, helium and hydrogen are also used for some niche industrial gas mixtures. The sources for most of these gases are bulk liquefied gases from ASU’s or bulk liquefied carbon dioxide deliveries from a local source.  Acetylene is produced at specialist cylinder filling facilities from the reaction between water and calcium carbide.

These industrial cylinder gases are either supplied as pure gases or as gas mixtures, for example gas mixtures of argon and carbon dioxide are very common for welding. Gas mixtures at various concentrations are created by blending together the pure gases in gas mixing equipment. As with all gas mixing operations, the composition of the gas mixture must be analysed to ensure that it meets the required blend composition within acceptable tolerances. This will either be done using online direct read process analyzers such as the Uras26 and Magnos28 or by taking one full cylinder from a batch into a quality control laboratory for a quick check analysis on direct-read instrumentation. ABB experts around the world are ideally placed to support your industrial cylinder filling gas analysis requirements.

ABB gas analyzers – making specialty gases production truly special

Specialty gases mixtures differ from medical or industrial gas mixtures because they are often sold with a certificate of analysis which states the precise composition of the gas. For this reason, the type of instrumentation used in specialty gases production is generally quite precise. Since there is a broad range of components that may be filled as calibration gases the amount and type of analytical equipment is also highly diverse. The number of gas analyzers required will depend on the complexity of the specialty gases cylinder filling operation at that site.

The production of simple specialty gases mixtures with a certificate of analysis is widespread with most industrial gases companies producing some mixtures locally in most countries. More complex specialty gases mixtures will be produced at more specialised regional hubs which will have a broader production capability and may also operate at a higher level of measurement accuracy. This means that they require more gas analyzers and instrumentation that is able to operate at high precision and with low detection limits. An advanced regional specialty gases cylinder filling operation and the associated QC laboratory may have more than 20 gas analyzers. These will range from direct read NDIR equipment such as the Uras26 for mixtures containing carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide to the Magnos28, which is a paramagnetic gas analyzer, for mixtures containing oxygen. Also, sophisticated GC setups for complex multi-component hydrocarbon gas mixtures will be used. With such a divers range of applications, direct contact with your local ABB gas analyzer expert might be the most suitable next step.

Medical oxygen and medical gas mixtures – saving lives and relieving pain

The two main medical gases are oxygen and nitrous oxide. Oxygen is used for various therapies related to respiratory ailments and nitrous oxide is used for pain relief. They are either supplied separately as pure gases or as a gas mixture, typically 50% nitrous oxide in oxygen. The mixture is created by blending together the pure gases in gas mixing equipment. As with all gas mixing operations, the composition of the gas mixture must be analysed to ensure that it meets the 50 / 50 specification within the acceptable tolerances and the use on an online direct read analyzer such as the Magnos28 for oxygen measurement can support operational excellence.

The analytical techniques for medical gases are tightly defined by national and international standards. This means that the specification of analytical instrumentation is defined very tightly. With so much at steak, there is no room to compromise. ABB gas analyzers will give your team the peace of mind to know that they are doing the best for the hospitals and patients they are serving.
