Every day millions of barrels of a variety of crude oils from the far reaches of the world are processed in hundreds of refineries into hundreds of products. The global supply system routinely moves billions of liters of product per day through a complex network of terminals, depots and pipelines – using barges, rail wagons and trucks to get to the end of the line.

Beside Oil & Gas sector that has an important role in Terminal storage we can see that storage products cover other markets no less important e.g., chemical products, beverage, etc. Commonly storage terminals were manually operated but with new technology available nowadays it is possible to increase efficiency, safety and security during the operation process while reducing risk and costs.

Traditional process control and automation applications have not been designed for the functionality and high-volume transaction processing capability required by distribution. While ABB's TMS (Terminal Management System) denominated T-MAC Plus was created ground up with requirements of distribution enterprise in mind.

ABB's Center of Excellence for Terminal Automation located in Madrid offers a solution for TMS supported over System 800xA platform. It handles product receipt, storage and dispatch, and integrates with business systems. It was specifically designed for managing bulk plants (e.g. crude oil terminals) for primary distribution or oil, gas and chemical product distribution terminals (secondary distribution) in the most efficient way and keeping the terminal operating costs to a minimum.

This enhanced terminal operations solution architecture is based on the functional hierarchy, presented in Figure 2, which is applicable to any terminal.

The architecture includes workstations, engineering stations, servers, printers and communication with field elements like: presets, card readers, weight bridge or tank gauging system. It is also possible to interface with ERP, besides DCS, ESD and F&G.

Redundancy

Terminal Management System is designed over redundant and fault tolerant servers, making the system reliable and safety in this critical process. Servers such as Aspect, Connectivity & T-MAC Plus server. Server that manage T-MAC Plus application is redundant and fault tolerant without data loss. When one server fails, the fail-over to redundant server won’t require any user intervention.

ERP Connection

Focused on improving the data management T-MAC Plus is able to communicate with Enterprise Resource Planning (such SAP) using web services as standard interface method, helping to increase accuracy and speed in execution and invoice cycle.

Centralized system

When different facilities have to be communicated to or from central dispatching, this structure can be managed with T-MAC Plus, ensuring the correct operation and monitoring the receipt and dispatch of product at all times, through the remote communication with each facility

ABB T-MAC Plus terminal management system is a set of hardware & software elements to carry out all data management task that are performed in a loading terminal. Thoroughly tested and standardized components are used to build up a system to manage and control access to the terminal entry/exit, product receipt, balance and inventory management, loading control, external system integration, etc.

Today, effective operation requires agile response to unanticipated changes. “Best of breed” application interfacing is not enough; systems must be vertically integrated from the data center to real-time controller sensors. Rapid response requires timely, accurate data and effective manageable integration. The situation is further complicated by the diversity of terminals across countries, industries, companies, and divisions, meaning that no two terminals have same functional requirements. Therefore, a more "a la carte" approach to meeting terminal operations requirements is needed.

Terminal automation software requirements are among the most diverse and granular of any application software market. The effect is that the exact same system rarely works well in two different terminals. Thus successful terminal automation applications must be highly configurable and easily tailored to meet unique terminal requirements.

As a result of this analysis T-MAC Plus has been developed as a standard and modular solution with the flexibility to configure only the functionality's that requires each application and tailored according particular requirements needed.
