The power generation control solution helps to maintain stable plant operation of frequency and voltage and coordinated control of generator power outputs. It ensures sharing of active and reactive power demand among generators and tie-lines to allow the working points of the generators to operate with maximum possible spinning reserves and therefore ensures that the customer power network can withstand bigger disturbances.
The solution is designed to utilize the full potential of the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation devices and is based on full integration of ABB's Relion protection and control relays, Remote I/O unit RIO600 and AC800M controller. Together they form the secondary control system working in coordination with the generator primary control system comprising of the speed governor and automatic voltage regulator.
IEC 61850 GOOSE communication between the ABB devices ensures that a reliable exchange of signals required for power control functionality.
Scope
- Active and Reactive power control of single generator or multiple generators (load sharing) up to 6 generators
- Utility tie line power exchange, power factor control, peak shaving
- Maintaining voltage and frequency of power network when islanded from grid.
Benefits
- Stability in power supply within customer premises, when connected to grid and when isolated
- Fuel savings using power sharing across generators
- Automatic operation
