ABB is building on its ABB Ability™ eMine portfolio of solutions to help Talga Group construct the largest lithium-ion battery anode production facility in Europe

Location: Sweden
Customer: Talga Group Ltd

Battery anode and advanced materials company Talga Group Ltd is constructing an ultra-low-emission battery anode production facility and integrated graphite mining operation in northern Sweden. The Vittangi Anode Project will be powered by 100-percent renewable electricity to supply ultra-low emission coated anodes for green lithium-ion batteries.

Talga’s strategic vision is to build a European battery anode and graphene additives supply chain that creates a more sustainable world. Vertical integration, including ownership of several high-grade Swedish graphite projects, will give Talga Group security of supply and creates long-lasting value for its stakeholders.

Challenge

  • Talga Group needs to electrify its underground mining operations when it reaches the expansion phase of its Swedish battery anode operations.

Solution

  • ABB and Talga will explore an electrification strategy under the expanded MoU, focusing on the ABB Ability™ eMine portfolio of solutions. ABB will also extend its industrial automation and electrification expertise to include next-level production and process control solutions for Talga’s initial operation.

Benefits

  • ABB is helping Talga accomplish its strategic goal of zero-emission, sustainable battery graphite mining and processing.
  • With ABB’s expertise, Talga Group will build and operate the largest integrated lithium-ion battery anode production facility in all of Europe.
“The pursuit of innovation towards zero-emission mining is a goal we share with ABB, and we are excited to continue the expanded partnership towards construction of the Vittangi Anode Project and future expansions.”
Mark Thompson, Managing Director, Talga Group
“Following a detailed planning phase, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Talga on all aspects of the Vittangi Anode Project. Together, we will explore the role of ABB Ability™ eMine, our portfolio of solutions that will help accelerate the move towards a zero-carbon mine, in Talga’s future expansions.”
Björn Jonsson, Hub Manager, Process Industries, ABB

From initial feasibility studies through to full deployment

ABB and Talga Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop Talga Group’s Vittangi Anode Project in northern Sweden.

ABB completed a pre-feasibility study in May 2019, discovering that the location in Sweden is a low-risk mining and investment jurisdiction. Northern Europe’s available supply of low-cost green electricity from a range of large-scale renewable sources is also a major draw, and will support the production of Talga’s low CO₂ battery anodes. The site in northern Sweden is also close to emerging European battery gigafactories currently under development.

ABB is working with Talga on commercial front-end engineering and design for the development and construction of two Swedish battery material facilities:

  1. Vittangi: 100,000tpa graphite-concentrator operation
  2. Luleå:  19,500tpa anode production plant

ABB’s collaboration includes ramp-up stages and production qualification modules. Talga Group aims to complete the commercial front-end engineering and design stages by June 2022.

Once the front-end engineering and design stages are completed, Talga Group aims to retain ABB for construction and operations. Talga Group’s partnership with ABB is playing a vital role in helping Talga Group realize its sustainability vision.
