In our transition to a green, emission-free future, electric mobility has a critical role to play. As a global leader in electrical vehicle (EV) charging solutions, ABB offers the widest portfolio of high quality, highly reliable AC and DC charging hardware along with a range of digital management solutions.
A few of these solutions were recently installed at the ABB Australia office in Notting Hill, Victoria. These EV chargers are enabling convenient charging for ABB employees while they go about their workday. They offer employees an opportunity to experience ABB’s industry-leading solutions first-hand right here in Australia.
Charging convenience for employees
The main solutions installed at the ABB Notting Hill office are Terra 124 DC Fast Chargers – which provide continuous DC Fast Charging and can charge two EVs simultaneously. Also installed are Terra 24 Wallbox DC chargers and Terra AC Wallbox chargers with load management capability.
Peter Smith, Technology Manager E-Mobility at ABB observes that many employees are switching to electric vehicles and now with the chargers being installed, the office has become a convenient charging location.
Peter, who drives his own EV to work, says the location where an EV spends the majority of its time is a key influencing factor in charging habits.
“The adoption of electric vehicles within the Australian market has grown significantly in the last few years. And we know that a significant amount of electric vehicle charging happens either in your home or your place of work,” says Peter.
According to Peter, having the EV charging facility at work offers a degree of flexibility to employees like himself on their charging journey.
“It enables me to plan my journeys better – whether I’m on my way to see a customer or just going back home. Being able to factor office charging into my journey is a really important part of making good use of time in the office.”
While Peter has EV charging also installed at his home, he notes many employees may not have access to charging at their residences, especially those in apartment buildings that do not offer the facility. For these employees, EV charging at work is a welcome proposition.
ABB is now setting up a platform to make it easy for employees to use the EV charging solutions at Notting Hill. This will enable staff to use a swipe card or a downloadable mobile app to manage their use of the chargers. Visitors will be able to use EV charging with a guest pass or via a QR code.
Enabling corporate sustainability goals
With organisations increasingly focused on sustainability initiatives, EV charging for employees can serve as an important step in helping reduce carbon emissions and meeting a company’s sustainability goals. According to Sean Stove, Division Manager E-Mobility at ABB, adding EV charging infrastructure is one way companies can encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, thereby fostering a more sustainable mode of transportation.
“More and more companies today are stepping up their sustainability initiatives and getting that message out,” says Sean. “If you are one of those and want to demonstrate that you're a sustainable organisation committed to mitigating climate change, then installing EV chargers on your site clearly sends this great message.”
“It's not only good for the environment but also good for your employees. There are a number of government incentives for employees to move to electric vehicles and providing EV charging for them at work makes that switch just that much easier.”
"Transport made up 19% of the emissions in the Australian economy in 2022, and if we don't take action, it will be the largest contributor to emissions by 2030."
As Australian companies and individuals increasingly make the shift to E-mobility in their efforts to decarbonise their vehicles, ABB as an electrification leader involved in electrical engineering for 120 years in Australia, will continue to have a big role to play.
“We're an ideal partner to help you through the whole process, from grid to plug,” says Sean.
