Preventing water shortages and ensuring availability of water to over 600,000 residents

With a population of over 600,000 people, the Koppal district is regularly challenged by water shortages and needed solutions that could effectively monitor water flow and manage leaks. Until now, responses have ranged
from preserving ancient wells to following age-old water conservation practices, but thanks to digital technologies, the Kushtagi and Yelburga
villages will soon benefit from ABB’s digital water management solutions as part of a multi-village clean drinking water scheme.

The project brings clean treated river water across a network of remote terminal units and pumping stations leveraging ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus SCADA to supervise and
control the operation. ABB’s AquaMaster 4 electromagnetic flowmeters help monitor and analyze daily flow consumption patterns, offering flow measurement accuracy reliability even at the smallest velocities

Ensuring resilient water supply for millions of customers in the UK

Severn Trent relies on 24/7 availability of power for its Melbourne water treatment works (WTW), which supplies water for one million residential, commercial and industrial customers in the Leicestershire area. Voltage disturbances from the grid can interrupt the water treatment process and can take eight hours to resolve, during which the site cannot supply water. Therefore, any voltage disturbance can lose one third of the site’s 240 megalitres per day (Ml/d) production, equivalent to 80 million litres. ABB stepped in to deliver state-of-the-art equipment that overcame power stability issues at Melbourne to ensure resilient water supply, prompting the utility to order four additional units.

Wanjiazhai Yellow River Water Diversion Project

In order to resolve the challenge with freshwater scarcity in the Shanxi Province and the Beijing-Tianjing-Hebei region the Chinese government commissioned the Wanjiazhai Yellow River Water Diversion Project. The project has the aim to transports water from the Yellow river to the regions situated on a level that is 636 meters higher. ABB supplied medium voltage motors and medium voltage LCI drives to ensure energy efficient and reliable pumping of freshwater for local economic and social development needs.

Providing access to safe, clean drinking water to people living in this landlocked nation

There was a need to transfer water from reservoirs in the north to meet the demands of a growing population in Gaborone, the capital, in the south. ABB was brought on board to implement its ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus distributed control system (DCS), an instrumentation package and other power equipment to ensure the smooth transfer of water across a new water pipeline and pump station. The percentage of people with access to safe drinking water because of the project rose from 77% to 96%

Supplying fresh drinking water to a nation covered in 80% desert

The Al Ghubra Seawater Desalination Plant is one of the largest reverse osmosis plants in the Persian Gulf region. With increasing consumption demands, ABB was brought on board to help improve production capacity and reduce power costs to supply an affordable portable drinking water solution accessible by all. ABB deployed its ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus digital control technology to improve efficiency at the plant, optimize production, increase safety, reliability of output all the while reducing cost and risk. After only one year in operation, the plant met Oman's increasing demand for drinking water, growing its output capacity by over 600,000 m3/day and continues to build upon this growth by a further six percent year on year.

Supplying safe clean drinking water to rural communities

While 95 percent of the country has electricity, less than half the population enjoy pipe-borne water from the National Water Supply and Drainage Board. Inhabitants of rural villages still carry water in gallons from one place to another, often travelling many miles. ABB was brought on board to supply the entire electrical, instrumentation and automation control equipment, for pumping stations and a treatment plant.  As a result of the project drinking water output has increased by 130,000m³ per day.

Ensuring Singapore, one of the world’s most water-stressed nations that has no natural water sources, is able to achieve water security through the reclamation of used water

Singapore is investing heavily in technology that will help it provide its growing population with high-quality water in the future. With a treatment capacity of 800,000m³ per day – enough to fill over 300 Olympic-size swimming pools – the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant will receive used water flows and apply membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to treat and purify 650,000m³/day of domestic used water to generate NEWater.

Leveraging its ABB Ability™ 800xA control platform and Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA), ABB is deploying process control systems across multiple facilities at the site, enabling operators on site to gain complete visibility of operations and access to all process data to take decisions that optimize performance and efficiency in real time.

Mitigating water leakages

Leakages in water networks are a major problem with lot of water being lost on annual basis due to breaking pipes. Water being a scares resource tackling this problem is important for ABB offers a solution in form of water dedicated drives. The drives have built-in features that mitigate water hammer with the soft pipe fill feature.

Smart, safe and sustainable electrification delivers clean water supply in Surat

Surat faces significant water demand from industrial sectors, with clusters of textile units consuming more than 450 million litres per day. Accordingly, the city is addressing the critical issue of optimum water usage across domestic, commercial, and industrial consumption.

A digitally powered system boosted by safe and secure electrical distribution equipment from ABB India enables Surat Municipal Corporation to sustainably optimize the distribution of water across the city. A stable power supply also prevents water waste by identifying leaks through effective monitoring, while also supporting the supply of clean and uninterrupted water to one million residents across 38 sq km area.
